4th, 5th, 6th Grade: December 16, 2015

This week, we learned all about another "amiga del día." (Friend of the day).  We practiced learning our Bible memory verse (Psalm 100) in Spanish--all five verses!  We also watched a few videos of Belenes (and how to make them!), and had a Spanish Christmas carol sing-a-long time.

Ask your student:
  • Who was the "amiga del día" in Spanish class today?  What is one thing you learned about her?  (This week, our Amiga del Día was a girl who has a pet rabbit.)

Today in class, we reviewed the Christmas vocabulary words that we learned last week.  We also reviewed Spanish numbers from 1-50 with a Christmas BINGO game.

1st Grade: December 16, 2015

This week in Spanish class, we continued our Christmas unit!  We reviewed basic Christmas vocabulary words and talking about some of the animals that may have been at Jesus' birth.  It's a great way to review the animals we learned about earlier this year.  We're also learning a Christmas song that is very popular in Mexico!

Ask your student:
  • Can you show me some of the actions from the Burrito de Belén song?  (Burrito: make floppy donkey ears with your hands, el camino:  make a path with your hands, Belén:  outline the tops of houses and other buildings with your hands.)

    • Belenes:  In fourth, fifth, and sixth grade, we learned that many families in Spain decorate their homes with Belenes...or scenes of Bethlehem (not just the stable).  Design one of your own!

    This week, we learned all about two more "amigos del día." (Friend of the day).  We practiced learning our Bible memory verse (Psalm 100) in Spanish--all five verses!  We also learned a little about a Christmas tradition in Spain.

    • Who were the "amigos del día" in Spanish class today?  What is one thing you learned about each of them  (This week, we had two amigos del día.  A girl who likes to ride her bike, and boy who likes to practice archery.)  
    • How do most people in Spain decorate for Christmas?  (The put up a "belén"...it's like a nativity set, but much bigger.  It has Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, shepherds, wise men, and animals, but also buildings, mountains, a lot of other people and animals, and even King Herod and his soldiers.)

    2nd Grade: December 9, 2015

    Today in class, we began our Christmas unit!  Today, we reviewed some basic Christmas vocabulary and we used that vocabulary to talk about a Christmas tradition in Mexico:  Las Posadas!  

    Ask your student:
    • Do you remember the actions you did for María, José, and el Niño Jesús?  (María-pretend to hold a baby and pat him on the back, José-pretend to carve something out of wood, el Niño Jesús-rock a baby in your arms).  
    • What is "Las Posadas"?  (Posadas means "inns".  In Mexico, people organize parties for the 9 days leading up to Christmas.  They walk from house to house asking if they can go in...just like Mary and Joseph had to look for a place to stay.  Finally, they get to the "right" house that will let them come in and have a party.  In Mexico, they always plan out who will host the parties in advance!  We did this in class!  Some students "hosted" parties, others were Mary, Joseph, or the Angel.  Ask your student what his/her role was!)

    This week, we continued our "me gusta" (I like) unit.  I loved listening as each student introduced his or her "amigo" to the class...all in Spanish!  We laughed a lot as the students worked hard to speak only Spanish today.

    Today in class, we finished our unit about Peru by learning about Machu Picchu and looking at some traditional clothing.  We also played a Jeopardy-style game to review everything we learned.

    • Do you remember what Machu Picchu is?  (It is an old palace for an emperor/lost city of the Incas.  The mountain in the background looks like a face if you turn it on its side.) 
    • Do you remember what "Machu Picchu" means?  ("Machu Picchu" comes from the Quechua language.  It means "the old mountain.")

      1st Grade: December 2, 2015

      This week, we started class by talking about the weather and seasons.  After practicing our Bible memory verse, we concluded our "Ayudo a mi familia" (I help my family) unit by playing a game to review the vocabulary words we've learned.

      Ask your student:
      • What was the game you played in Spanish class today?  (Students brought home a "game board" of a house with different rooms, and cards that show various chores/actions.  I would say a sentence in Spanish, and students would put the card in the corresponding room based on what I said in Spanish.  Some sentences made sense, like "The dad prepares the food in the kitchen," and some were just silly, like "The mom sleeps in the bathroom.")

      Today in class, we concluded our unit about body parts in Spanish.  We began by playing a few games to review all of the vocabulary words we've learned so far.  We sang some songs to practice a bit more, and finally, we looked at all of the "amigos imaginarios" that students created last time.  We were able to talk about them all in Spanish!

      • Which "amigo imaginaro" (imaginary friend) is yours?  Can you tell me about it in Spanish?  (Check out the creative "amigos" in THIS SLIDE SHOW.  We spent time in class asking and answering questions about them in Spanish.)

      This week, we learned all about two more "amigos del día." (Friend of the day).  We practiced learning our Bible memory verse (Psalm 100) in Spanish.  We also learned some new vocabulary words for our Bible story unit.  We almost have all of the vocabulary words we need, to talk about Mary and Martha in Spanish.

      • Who were the "amig@s del día" in Spanish class today?  What is one thing you learned about each of them?  (This week, we had two amigas del día.  One girl who enjoys playing soccer and another who loves horseback riding.)

        • In class (December 2), you can choose to help your "amigo" tell the class about his/her likes and dislikes.  This Spanish presentation is worth 2 stickers.
        • If you make a few props for your amigo, that is worth an extra sticker.  (For example, if your amigo says "Me gusta jugar fútbol," you can make a soccer ball prop.)
        • NOTE:  If you misplaced your popsicle stick amigo from class, you can use a popsicle stick from home, or another similar shaped object (clothes pin, pencil, cut out construction paper)

      Today in class, we continued learning all about Peru.  All in Spanish, we went looking for condors ("Goin' on a Bear Hunt" style).  We also continued reviewing numbers 30-49.

        1st Grade: November 18, 2015

        This week, we started class by talking about the weather, but we will also be learning about the seasons in Spanish.  We even sang a new song and watched a silly video (both linked below) to help us remember the words.  After practicing our Bible memory verse, we started to wrap up our "Ayudo a mi familia" (I help my family) unit.  We read/acted out a short story (all in Spanish!) about a boy who helped his dad with a lot chores around the house.

        Today in class, we used songs and games to review the vocabulary words we have learned so far in this unit.  After learning a few more new words, we looked at some pretty silly "amigos imaginarios" (imaginary friends).  We talked about these crazy amigos all in Spanish, and then students had a chance to create their own amigos.

        • In Spanish class, you drew an "amigo imaginario" (imaginary friend).  What was yours like?  (Everyone had some pretty creative friends!  After Thanksgiving, we'll use these drawings to keep practicing our vocabulary words.)

        4th, 5th, 6th Grade: November 11, 2015

        This week, we learned all about two more "amigos del día." (Friend of the day).  We practiced learning our Bible memory verse (Psalm 100) in Spanish.  We also learned some new vocabulary words for our Bible story unit.  We almost have all of the vocabulary words we need, to talk about Mary and Martha in Spanish.

        Ask your student:
        • Who were the "amig@s del día" in Spanish class today?  What is one thing you learned about each of them?  (This week, we had two amigos del día.  One girl who enjoys painting, and a boy who likes Legos.)
        • What does it mean when Señora Brouwer types something with the @ sign?  (It could be a "o" or an "a."  It's a abbreviation that native Spanish speakers use.  Instead of saying amigo (friend who's a boy) and amiga (friend who's a girl) they write "amig@" to be both.)
        • What do "the man," "the shoulder," and "hunger" all have in common?  (They all sound similar in Spanish!  The man = el hombre; the shoulder = el hombro; the hunger = el hambre...try saying it 3 times!)

          This week, we learned all about not one, but TWO "amigas del día." (Friend of the day).  We practiced learning our Bible memory verse (Psalm 100) in Spanish...even adding verse 4 this week.  We also learned some new vocabulary words for our Bible story unit.  Over the next few weeks, we'll learn more words to eventually talk about a Bible story all in Spanish. Today, one of the students guessed what story it is!

          Today in class, we played a "hot potato" game to review the words we learned last week.  After that, we learned some new vocabulary words with the help of our friend, Espantapájaros.  We sang some songs and played another game to finish class.

          Ask your student:
          • What new songs did you learn in Spanish class this week? (We learned two songs... Father Abraham, and Head and Shoulders, Knees, and Toes...but in Spanish it's Head and Shoulders, Legs, and Feet!)

          4th, 5th, 6th Grade: October 28, 2015

          This week, we learned all about a new "amigo del día." (Friend of the day).  We practiced learning our Bible memory verse (Psalm 100) in Spanish.  We also learned some new vocabulary words.  Right now, the words are a seemingly random combination, but they're actually taken from a Bible story.  Over the next few weeks, we'll learn more words to eventually talk about a Bible story all in Spanish.

          Ask your student:
          • Who was the "amigo del día" in Spanish class today?  What is one thing you learned about him?  (This week, our "amigo del día" was a boy and he likes crocodiles.)
          • If someone asks "¿por qué? how could you answer their question?  (¡Porque!  ¿Por qué?--two words with an accent mark means "why?" and porque--one word, with no accent means "because!")

          This week, we began a new unit in class!  We'll be learning to talk about things we enjoy doing in Spanish.  We spent 25 minutes speaking only in Spanish and we had a lot of fun today asking "normal" questions ("Do you like to eat chocolate?") and silly questions ("Do you like to swim in chocolate?").

          • What does "me gusta" like?  (Me gusta means "I like."  We watched a song/video in class today that reviewed this phase.)

          Over the next few weeks, we'll be discovering Peru in class!  This week, we spent some time talking about where Peru is located, it's flag, and what the seasons are like.  We finished class by playing another game to review numbers 20-39 in Spanish.

          • When it's winter in Michigan, what season is it in Peru?  (Summer!  Peru's seasons are the opposite of ours.)
          • What does Peru's flag look like?  (It's red and white and it has a design/picture/coat of arms in the center.)

          Today in class we finished our unit about  Las Mascotas (pets).  Students introduced their pets (or dream pets) to the class...using only Spanish!  I was very impressed with everyone who shared about their pets all in Spanish!!  Way to go Third Graders!!
