4th/5th/6th Grade: January 27, 2016

Over the next few weeks, we'll be learning and reviewing a lot of high frequency vocabulary words through silly stories.  As part of this unit, we'll also be learning the Spanish question words.

Ask your student:
  • Who was the "amiga del día" in Spanish class today?  What is one thing you learned about her?  (This week, our "amigo del día" was a girl who loves spending time with her extended family!)  
  • What was the silly story about in Spanish?  Could you understand most of it?  (It was about a cucumber named Lorenzo and tomato named Roberto...like Veggie Tales!)

  • What phrase would you say when someone would leave to use the bathroom?  (Se fue.  He/she left.  I also started making students say "regresaré pronto"--I'll be back soon--before they leave to use the bathroom!)

2nd: January 27, 2016

We continued learning different school-related vocabulary words with several games. 

Ask your student:
  • What is the "student-teacher challenge"? (Señora Brouwer puts pictures of the vocabulary words on the board.  One student comes up, and Señora Brouwer says words in Spanish and that student has to tap the right picture on the board.  The student gets 6 words and has to get 4 correct to "win"...otherwise Señora Brouwer wins that round.  So far, the students are winning 5-0!)

1st Grade: January 27, 2016

We began class by talking about the weather and calendar in Spanish.  Then, we continued talking about days of the week...and fruits...and a little caterpillar!  We'll be practicing days of the week, learning all about foods, and reading The Very Hungary Caterpillar all in Spanish!

Ask your student:
  • Why do you get stickers in Spanish class?  (We spent most of class today doing "no inglés."  Any time a student answers a question in Spanish, he earns a sticker!)

In class today, we continued learning the vocabulary to talk about getting ready to play out in the snow!

Ask your student:
  • How fast were you able to get all of your snow clothes on in Spanish class?  (We had the whole class get ready as quickly as possible.  They had to listen for Señora Brouwer to say the word in Spanish before putting that article of clothing on.  The first time we tried, it took 4:54, but the second time was just 2:57!)

    Today in class, we started learning words for a Bible story in Spanish!  Right away, several students were able to guess...we'll be learning the story of the Good Samaritan in Spanish.

    Ask your student:
    • What was the silly story about in Spanish class?  (To practice our vocabulary words, I told the students a silly story.  It was about animals who would walk along a path and then fall down.  Other animals would come come by and wouldn't be able to help, so they would go and find another animal to help.  In the end, they worked as a team!)

      2nd Grade: January 13, 2016

      1st Grade: January 13, 2016

      We began class by talking about the weather and calendar in Spanish.  Then, we started our new unit.  Over the next few weeks, we'll be learning all about different foods in Spanish.  Today we learned the phrases "me gusta" and "no me gusta" (I like/I don't like)to help us talk about foods each week!

      Ask your student:
      • What did you make in Spanish class?  (Each student used a paper plate and drew two faces...one side was a "me gusta" (happy) face, and the other side was a "no me gusta" (sad) face.)

        Today in class, we learned about the tradition of eating Rosca de Reyes in Spain and Mexico!

        Ask your student:
        • What did you think about the Rosca de Reyes? (Most students really enjoyed the sweet bread!) 
        • What was the surprise in class?  (Most other "Rosca de Reyes" that Señora Brouwer has bought in Holland did NOT have a small Baby Jesus figure due to food laws.  We were all surprised to find an extra figure in our Rosca!)

        2nd Grade: January 6, 2016

        Today in class, we started learning the numbers 50-100.  Each week, we'll have at least some small activity to review numbers, but today, we dedicated the entire class period to numbers.

        • What numbers did you choose for the guessing game?  (In small groups, students played a más/menos --more/less-- guessing game.)

        1st Grade: January 6, 2016

        First semester, we began every class by talking about the weather in Spanish.  We'll continue to do that second semester, but we'll also talk about the calendar in Spanish too.  Today, we learned the days of the week in Spanish.

        Ask your student:
        • What game did you play in Spanish class?  (Each student was assigned a different day of the week.  I would say the days in Spanish, and students would say the day in English.)
