5th and 6th Grade: March 25, 2015

We talked a bit more about the Spanish festival of "Las Fallas."  We watched a video of a "mascleta" (see below!)

Ask your student:
  • What is the "noche de fuego"?  (It's on March 19, the last night of the Fallas festival.  Around 10 PM they begin burning the fallas.  This continues until all of the fallas have been burned.  Then they have a fireworks show.)

Homework
  • New Bible Memory Passage:  The Lord's Prayer
  • Our new song: Countries and Capitals of Central America/The Caribbean and Countries and Capitals in Reverse.  We'll be listening to this song in class each week.  The goal is for students to learn all of the countries and capitals by the end of April.
  • Quia Assignment (worth 2 pegatinas).  For the assignment, you will need the reading we started in class.  If you misplaced or left your paper at school, you can print/view a copy HERE.
  • Are you feeling adventurous and/or hungry?  You can try out two new recipes to taste the traditional foods of the fallas festival:
    • Paella:  This recipe "cheats" a bit using Goya brand Arroz Amarillo.  The Arroz Amarillo is available at Meijer, and it saves you from buying expensive saffron.  The recipe calls for clams, hard chorizo, and fancy pimiento.  Feel free to substitute your favorite meats (turkey kielbasa is good substitute for the hard chorizo and chicken thighs are also common in paella recipes), or make a vegetable paella.  Roasted red peppers are a good substitute for the pimiento.

3rd and 4th Grade: March 25, 2015

Today in class, we continued learning vocabulary to tell the story of Jonah all in Spanish.  We played a vocabulary game that challenged us to think quickly to remember our vocabulary words.

Ask your student:
  • Did you like the game you played in Spanish today?  (We played a "concentration" style game where students had to practice saying our vocabulary words to a beat.  We learned that it's tricky to do that!)

5th and 6th Grade: March 18, 2015

We talked a bit more about the Spanish festival of "Las Fallas."  We watched a video of a "mascleta" (see below!)

Ask your student:
  • What is the mascleta?  (It's a huge firecracker "show."  From March 1-19, it happens every day at 2pm.)
  • (This is a different video than the one we watched in class.  It's from 2009, but it shows the noise level on the side.  This video is actually in "Valenciano"--the language spoken in the Valencia region along with Spanish.)

Today in class, we continued learning vocabulary to tell a Bible story all in Spanish.  Students figured out that we would be talking about Jonah.  While we haven't learned enough vocabulary to talk about Jonah, we had enough to tell a ridiculous, made-up story in Spanish.

Ask your student:
  • What do you remember about the silly story in class?  (It was about a man who traveled all over in a boat.  His mom would tell him to go to Orlando, but he wouldn't listen because he was afraid of Mickey Mouse.)

Brouwer, el bombero: pretend to hold a fire hose, el policia: pretend to blow a whistle and direct traffic, el cartero: pretend to put mail in mailboxes, el pastor: say "Amén," el médico: pretend to listen to a heartbeat.)

5th and 6th Grade: March 11, 2015

Over the next few weeks, we'll be talking about a popular Spanish festival, Las Fallas.  The festival takes place every March in Valencia, Spain.  We'll be reading a short story (in Spanish!) to learn about the festival and review a lot of the vocabulary we have learned this year.

Ask your student:
  • What is what thing you learned about "Las Fallas" so far?  (It's a festival in Valencia, Spain.  It takes place in March.  They make huge statues out of wood and paper mache and burn them.)

This week's vocabulary:

  • su/sus - his, her, their
  • alegres - happy 
  • quieren - they want

  • abre - he/she opens
  • vestidos - dresses
  • encuentra - he/she finds

Today in class, we began a new unit.  Over the next few weeks, we'll be learning the vocabulary to retell a Bible story all in Spanish!

  • How can you remember that the word for "sheep" is "oveja" (pronounced "OBEY-ha")? (Sheep have to obey their shepherd, just like we are God's sheep and Jesus is our Good Shepherd.  Also, in Spanish, sheep say "Beeeeee" instead of "baaa."  You can have fun saying OBEEEEEEY-ha and sounding like sheep!)

  • Do you remember the actions you learned for each of the new words?  (La casa: hold two arms over head like a roof; la escuela: stomp feet--as if to say "right here," el hospital: ambulance noise, la iglesia: fold hands, holding up index fingers as a steeple, el supermercado: pretend to push a cart, la tienda: pretend to pay for something.)

    • Un ratoncito - a mouse

Today in class we finished our unit about "las descripciones/descriptions."  We looked at some paintings by Spanish speaking artists and described people in the paintings.

Today in class, we finished talking about cascarones by reading Carmen Lomas Garza's own description of her painting.

Ask your student:
  • Do you remember what Carmen Lomas Garza said about making cascarones in her family?  What would her brothers always do? (They would make cascarones together.  On Easter, after church, they would go swimming, and after swimming they would eat lunch.  After they ate, they would take out the cascarones.  Sometimes her brothers would put flour in the cascarones.  Then it would turn into a messy paste in everyone's wet hair.)
