Kindergarten: October 30, 2013

This week, we continued our unit all about zoo animals.  We continued learning the names of animals in Spanish.  For more information about our Animal Unit, click HERE.

Ask your student:
  • What were the 4 animals you talked about in Spanish class?  Do you remember how to say their names in Spanish?  (el león-the lion, el tigre-the tiger, el mono-the monkey, el elefante-the elephant)
  • What does a tiger do?  Or ask: "How do you say 'runs' in Spanish?"  (corre = he/she runs)
This week's vocabulary:
  • corre - he/she runs
  • el león - the lion
  • el tigre - the tiger
  • el mono - the monkey
  • el elefante - the elephant
Homework:
  • Practice our vocabulary words with these three slide shows Animals #1Animals #2, Animales #3

Today in class, we continued our new unit:  Los 5 Sentidos.  This week, we focused on taste.  For more information about this unit, click HERE.

Ask your student:
  • What game did you play to practice numbers/counting?  (We played a traditional game called Toma Todo.  Students would spin a top and follow the directions.  The would either take stones from a pile, or they would have to put stones back.)

Today's vocabulary:
  • la boca - the mouth

  • dulce - sweet

  • la boca - the mouth 
  • un ángel - an angel

Homework:
  • We learned a new song this week!  It's a common song in Spanish speaking countries that talks about giving thanks to God.  Sing along here:  Demos Gracias (Let's Give Thanks)

In class today, we continued learning more words of our Bible story...Daniel in the Lions' Den!  Little by little, we'll be learning the vocabulary words to read (and retell) the story in Spanish.  For more information about our new unit, click HERE.

  • Can you show me the actions that go with at least 4 of your new vocabulary words?  (Students helped to think up motions to help us remember each of the new vocabulary words.)

  • What was the surprise box that Sra. Brouwer had in class?  (Students would reach into a box to touch a hidden object.  They would describe the object to the class...is it smooth or rough?  hard or soft?)

  • las orejas - the ears (the outer ear, the part you can see and touch)

  • How can you remember the word sheep/la oveja?  (The sheep=la oveja...it sounds like "Obey-ha."  Jesus says that we are his sheep and He is our shepherd, so we remember that sheep have to obey their shepherd.)

  • salta - he/she jumps

  • canta - he/she sings
  • dice - he/she says

Today in class, we started our new unit:  Los 5 Sentidos.  We'll be learning about each of our 5 senses and how they help us to experience God's world.  For more information about our new unit, click HERE.

Ask your student:
  • What is "Veo, veo"? (It is like "I spy" in English.  We played it in class so we could review the color vocabulary words.)

Today's vocabulary:
  • veo - I see
  • los ojos - the eyes
  • los sentidos - the feelings/senses
  • Los colores (colors)
  • Game:  Veo, Veo
    • Veo, veo - I see, I see (Like "I spy")
    • ¿Qué ves? - What do you see?
    • Una cosita - A small thing

1st Grade: October 2, 2013

Today in Spanish class, we completed our first unit of the year:  La Mariposa Monarca (The Monarch Butterfly).  Today we reviewed everything and made a little booklet to remind ourselves of what we learned.

2/3: October 2, 2013

Today in class, we finished our first unit:  Mi rutina, la rutina de otros (My Routine and the Routine of Others).  Today we focused on differences between kids in the US and kids in Spain.

Ask your student:
  • At what time do we (usually) eat lunch?  Can you say that time in Spanish?  When would a kid in Spain eat lunch? (See Review of Time below.  We have learned how to say simple phrases such as eleven o'clock and eleven thirty.  In the US, most kids eat lunch around 12.  In Spain, most families eat around 2.)
  • When do kids in Spain get home from school?  (Most kids get home from school/(HC)2 between 3 and 3:30.  In Spain, kids go home from 1-3, but then they go back to school from 3-5.)

  • A las seis = at six o'clock
  • A las seis y media = at six thirty
  • A las ocho = at eight o'clock

On Wednesday, we finished our clothing and colors unit by reviewing all of the vocabulary with a few games.  Over the course of the year, we'll continue to practice this vocabulary.  Up next week? We'll begin learning about zoo animals!

Ask your student:

  • If it's hot out, what's one thing you would wear?  Can you name that in Spanish?  (pantalones cortos - shorts, la camiseta - the t-shirt...)
  • If it's cold out, what's one thing you would wear?  Can you name that in Spanish?  (pantalones - pants, la camisa - the long sleeve shirt, el gorro - the hat, la chaqueta - the jacket)

Today, we finished up our unit about Chile and we celebrated with a ramada.  We watched a short video of traditional cueca dancers and we played a mini version of the game rayuela.

Ask your student:
  • What is a ramada?  (It's an independence day party.  People eat empanadas, play traditional games, and dance the traditional dance of Chile:  la cueca.)
  • How do you play rayuela?  (You try to throw a stone as close as you can to a line drawn on the ground, or over a target filled with mud.  In class we played a mini version with nickles)

Today's vocabulary:

  • la ramada - Chilean independence day party
  • la cueca - the traditional dance of Chile
  • rayuela - a traditional Chilean game.  
  • comen - they eat
  • bailan - they dance
  • juegan - they play

Homework:
