4th, 5th, 6th Grade: November 18, 2015

This week, we learned all about two more "amigos del día." (Friend of the day).  We practiced learning our Bible memory verse (Psalm 100) in Spanish.  We also learned some new vocabulary words for our Bible story unit.  We almost have all of the vocabulary words we need, to talk about Mary and Martha in Spanish.

Ask your student:
  • Who were the "amig@s del día" in Spanish class today?  What is one thing you learned about each of them?  (This week, we had two amigas del día.  One girl who enjoys playing soccer and another who loves horseback riding.)

3rd Grade: November 18, 2015

This week, we continued our "me gusta" (I like) unit.  We watched some fun songs and short videos, learned a few more phrases, and began reviewing with some interesting friends.

    • Write 5 sentences, in Spanish, about what your amigo likes (or doesn't like) to do (worth 2 stickers).
    • You may write more sentences to earn more stickers.
    • In class (December 2), you can choose to help your "amigo" tell the class about his/her likes and dislikes.  This Spanish presentation is worth 2 stickers.
    • If you make a few props for your amigo, that is worth an extra sticker.  (For example, if your amigo says "Me gusta jugar fútbol," you can make a soccer ball prop.)
    • NOTE:  If you misplaced your popsicle stick amigo from class, you can use a popsicle stick from home, or another similar shaped object (clothes pin, pencil, cut out construction paper)
  • Did you miss any previous assignment?  You can still complete them for a sticker!

2nd Grade: November 18, 2015

Today in class, we continued learning all about Peru.  All in Spanish, we went looking for condors ("Goin' on a Bear Hunt" style).  We also continued reviewing numbers 30-49.

  • In Spanish class you had to use your imagination to go searching for something.  What was it?  (We went to Peru to search for a condor.  When we found one, we ran away.)

    1st Grade: November 18, 2015

    This week, we started class by talking about the weather, but we will also be learning about the seasons in Spanish.  We even sang a new song and watched a silly video (both linked below) to help us remember the words.  After practicing our Bible memory verse, we started to wrap up our "Ayudo a mi familia" (I help my family) unit.  We read/acted out a short story (all in Spanish!) about a boy who helped his dad with a lot chores around the house.

    Today in class, we used songs and games to review the vocabulary words we have learned so far in this unit.  After learning a few more new words, we looked at some pretty silly "amigos imaginarios" (imaginary friends).  We talked about these crazy amigos all in Spanish, and then students had a chance to create their own amigos.

    Ask your student:
    • In Spanish class, you drew an "amigo imaginario" (imaginary friend).  What was yours like?  (Everyone had some pretty creative friends!  After Thanksgiving, we'll use these drawings to keep practicing our vocabulary words.)

    4th, 5th, 6th Grade: November 11, 2015

    This week, we learned all about two more "amigos del día."     Ask your student:
    • Who were the "amig@s del día" in Spanish class today?  What is one thing you learned about each of them?  (This week, we had two amigos del día.  One girl who enjoys painting, and a boy who likes Legos.)
    • What does it mean when Señora Brouwer types something with the @ sign?  (It could be a "o" or an "a."  It's a abbreviation that native Spanish speakers use.  Instead of saying amigo (friend who's a boy) and amiga (friend who's a girl) they write "amig@" to be both.)
    • What do "the man," "the shoulder," and "hunger" all have in common?  (They all sound similar in Spanish!  The man = el hombre; the shoulder = el hombro; the hunger = el hambre...try saying it 3 times!)

      • Can you show me the weather book you made in Spanish class?  (Each week, students have a coloring sheet with a vocabulary word to color at the beginning of class.  Since the beginning of the year, the coloring sheets have had weather related vocabulary words.  Today, students brought the books home.)

      Today in class, we reviewed the vocabulary words from the past two weeks, by playing a few games and singing a few songs.  After that, we learned several more words body part (face) words.  We played with Mr. Potato Head, and even drew a funny Potato Head as a class.

      4th/5th/6th Grade: November 4, 2015

      This week, we learned all about not one, but TWO "amigas del día." (Friend of the day).  We practiced learning our Bible memory verse (Psalm 100) in Spanish...even adding verse 4 this week.  We also learned some new vocabulary words for our Bible story unit.  Over the next few weeks, we'll learn more words to eventually talk about a Bible story all in Spanish. Today, one of the students guessed what story it is!

      Kindergarten: November 4, 2015

      Today in class, we played a "hot potato" game to review the words we learned last week.  After that, we learned some new vocabulary words with the help of our friend, Espantapájaros.  We sang some songs and played another game to finish class.

      Ask your student:
      • What new songs did you learn in Spanish class this week? (We learned two songs... Father Abraham, and Head and Shoulders, Knees, and Toes...but in Spanish it's Head and Shoulders, Legs, and Feet!) 

      This week's vocabulary:

      • las manos - the hands
      • los pies - the feet
      • la espalda - the back
      • los hombros - the shoulders

      Review vocabulary:
      • espantapájaros - scarecrow
      • tiene - he/she has
      • la cabeza - the head
      • las piernas - the legs
