5th and 6th Grade: January 29, 2020

This week, we read a story about Alberto's friend, Bertita.

Ask your student:
  • What do you remember about Bertita's story? (She was a normal cow, but she had a problem.  She lived in Wisconsin, but she wanted to live in Hawaii.  She didn't have a car and she couldn't walk to Hawaii, so Alberto made her an origami boat to go to Hawaii.)

        • In 5th and 6th grade, there will be a Spanish homework assignment nearly every week.  In general, I will use online activities for our homework assignments.  These assignments will give students one extra opportunity during the week to practice Spanish.  Taking advantage of the extra practice helps language learning to "stick" more. 
      • Online assignments:
        • Students are allowed to practice and "redo" assignments as often as they like.  Practice is how we learn.
        • For each assignment completed, students will earn 2 "sellos o pegatinas" (stamps or stickers).  At the end of the year, they will be able to trade their stamps and stickers for small prizes.

      4th Grade: January 29, 2020

      This week we returned to talking about an "Amigo del día" (Friend of the day).  Over the next weeks, we'll continue learning more about each other as we learn how to describe people, their likes, dislikes and wants.

      1st Grade: January 29, 2020

      Today in Spanish class, students were incredibly patient with our projector that kept turning off!  We read a story about Enzo's friend, Rosita, and we played a potato guessing game.

      Ask your student:
      • Who was the estrellita in class today?  (Each week, students will take turns being the estrellita - star - in Spanish class.  They get to sit in a special chair and be a special helper in the class. ) 
      • What was your guessing game in Spanish class today?  (Señora Brouwer put up 15 pictures of different potatoes and she would describe one in Spanish...some had eyes, some had ears, some had arms, etc...  Students did a great job listening to the description and choosing the right one!)

            This week, we were able to hear the story that the 4th grade class created about their character.

(He had a problem.  He didn't want to be a cow.  He wanted to be a dragon.  He was good at origami.  He made a lot of origami dragons.  He signed his name "El Dragón."  He became rich and famous.  A silly story, but it's one we can tell using only Spanish and it focuses on the Super Seven verbs.)
            Ask your student:
            • What do you remember about Zara's story? (Zara is a fox who has a secret portal to Mars.  A superhero discovers the portal and is afraid of it.  Zara is afraid of the superhero.  She goes to Mars.  A silly story, but one that lets us get a lot of practice with Super 7 Verbs.)

They got to "meet" the characters that our 4th and 5th/6th grade classes created over the last few weeks.  Then, they got to vote for their favorite character.

                      Each week, we'll listen to and sing along with a fun song in Spanish.  It's a fun way to get us all up and moving while learning more!  If possible, I'll post a link to the song here so you can listen at home as well!

                        • In 5th and 6th grade, there will be a Spanish homework assignment nearly every week.  In general, I will use online activities for our homework assignments.  These assignments will give students one extra opportunity during the week to practice Spanish.  Taking advantage of the extra practice helps language learning to "stick" more. 
                      • Online assignments:
                        • Students are allowed to practice and "redo" assignments as often as they like.  Practice is how we learn.
                        • For each assignment completed, students will earn 2 "sellos o pegatinas" (stamps or stickers).  At the end of the year, they will be able to trade their stamps and stickers for small prizes.

                      4th Grade: January 15, 2020

                      This week, we continued the story of Zara the Zorro (fox)!  Next week, we'll get to meet the character created by the 5th/6th grade class!

                      • What do you remember about Zara's story? (Her secret was that she had a portal to Mars.  A superhero discovered the portal and was afraid.  In the end Zara went to Mars.  A silly story, but it's one we can tell using only Spanish and it focuses on the Super Seven verbs.)

                        This week, we continued talking about silly snowmen in Spanish class!  We began by practicing numbers and counting buttons on snowmen, then we played a snowman guessing game.

                        Ask your student:
                        • What was the snowman guessing game you played in class?  (There were 15 snowmen on the screen.  Each one was unique.  Señora Brouwer described a snowman in Spanish, and students had to guess which one it was!  We also reversed the game and let students ask questions to try to discover which snowman it was.  We had a lot of fun speaking Spanish!)

                            5th and 6th Grade: January 8, 2020

                            This week, we started a fun challenge!  Using only our imaginations and lots of Spanish, we began creating a "character."  The class created quite a character!  Next week, we'll add more details and create a story for our character.
