In class today, we learned the how 5 de mayo celebrations are similar and different in the US and Mexico.

• How are 5 de mayo celebrations different in Mexico and the US?  (In Mexico, it's a national holiday.  Government officials organize speeches and in some places, they reenact the battle.  In the US, it's more of a cultural celebration.  Different community groups organize parties to celebrate Mexican-American culture.  People don't really mention the battle.)

Today in class, we finished talking about cascarones by reading Carmen Lomas Garza's own description of her painting.

Ask your student:

• Do you remember what Carmen Lomas Garza said about making cascarones in her family?  What would her brothers always do? (They would make cascarones together.  On Easter, after church, they would go swimming, and after swimming they would eat lunch.  After they ate, they would take out the cascarones.  Sometimes her brothers would put flour in the cascarones.  Then it would turn into a messy paste in everyone's wet hair.)

In class today, we learned the history of the 5 de mayo holiday.

Ask your student:

• What is the history of the 5 de mayo holiday?  (The ruler of France, Napoleon III, wasn't too concerned about getting his money back, he really wanted to rule over Mexico.  The French army thought it would be easy to attack and take over Mexico.  On May 5, 1862, the French army attacked the Mexicans in Puebla, Mexico.  Even though Franc had 8,000 soldiers and Mexico only had 4,000, the Mexicans still won the battle.  It was the first time that France lost a battle in 50 years!  However, even though France lost the battle, they did end up winning the war and ruling Mexico for 5 years.)

Today in class, we watched a short video about making cascarones.  We also spent some extra time today talking about Spanish surnames (students were quite interested in this after learning that our artist, Carmen Lomas Garza, has two last names).  Parents, you can ask your student to explain it to you, and check out THIS VIDEO for some extra information.

• Why do people from Spanish speaking countries have two surnames ("last name" isn't a great term to use, because there are two!) (Their first surname comes from their dad and the second comes from their mom.  We had some fun today creating imaginary family trees!)

In class today, we continued our Animal unit!  Not only are we learning the names for animals, but we're also learning some colors and common verbs as well.

In class today, we learned what the 5 de mayo ISN'T.  We also talked about the problem that started the history of this holiday.

• Is 5 de mayo like the 4th of July?  (No, 5 de mayo isn't a celebration of independence.  Mexican independence day is September 16.) 
• What was the problem that started the 5 de mayo problem?  (Mexico owed money to Spain, France, and England.  Mexico didn't have money to pay them back.  Mexico asked for more time to pay the money back.  Spain and England said it was okay, but France said it was a problem...)

4th Grade: March 8, 2017

Today in class, we continued to look at a painting by Carmen Lomas Garza.  She painted a picture of her family making cascarones...Mexican Easter eggs.  If you're interested in learning a little more, I have some extra links in the homework section.

Ask your student:

• What are cascarones?  How do you make them? (They are egg shells filled with confetti. You make them by carefully making a small hold/taking a bit of the top of the egg off, pouring out the white and yolk, cleaning the shell, filling it with confetti, and decorating it!)

4th Grade: March 1, 2017

Today in class, we took another look at a painting by Carmen Lomas Garza.  After learning a few new vocabulary words, we started to learn a little more about what might be going on in the picture.  We also took a few minutes to talk about last names in Spanish speaking countries.  Students were asking about the artist's name and we learned that in Spanish speaking countries, everyone has two last names, one from the first one from their mom and the second one from their mom.  Since students were so interested in this, we'll spend a little more time on it next week.

Ask your student:

• What new things did you notice about this painting?  What questions did you have now? (The painting by Carmen Lomas Garza is what we'll be using to learn all about the Mexican tradition.  Each week, we'll discover a little more!  After learning words like "egg" and seeing a picture of a "cascarón"--a confetti-filled egg shell, students guessed that this is some sort of decorating tradition.)
