4th, 5th, 6th Grade: May 18, 2016

Today in class, students were able to use stickers they had earned in class to buy small prizes.

We also played Toma Todo, a traditional Mexican game.  The spinning tops we used in class were from Mexico, but you can follow THESE DIRECTIONS to make your own version of the game to play at home!


Vocabulary:

  • todos - all, everyone
  • todo - everything
  • toma todo - take it all
  • todos ponen - everyone put one in

1st Grade: May 18, 2015

To begin school today, we rode busses over to the High School for the All School End of the Year Celebration.  When we returned to South Side, we played "Pasa Pedro" (Pass Pedro...similar to Hot Potato) in class today.  It was a fun way to review vocabulary words that we learned over the course of the year.

4th, 5th, 6th Grade: May 4, 2016

Today in class, we took a week to

Ask your student:
  • What song did you listen to in Spanish that you're familiar with in English?  What words did you recognize?  (We listened to the song 10,000 Reasons in Spanish.  There were a lot of words that students were able to recognize.)

  • What song did you listen to that was completely new?  What was the song about?  (We listened to the song "Yo no camino solo" which means "I don't walk alone."  It's a song about how God is with us all the time wherever we go.)

  • Second Semester Bible Memory
    • This semester, we'll be memorizing two short passages in Spanish.  Students received a hard copy of the verses in class.  If your student misplaced the paper, you can print a new copy HERE.
    • Yo soy el buen pastor; conozco a mis ovejas y ellas me conocen a mí, así como el Padre me conoce a mí, y yo lo conozco a él, y doy mi vida por las ovejas.  Juan 10:14-15 (Juan diez, versículos catorce y quince.)

Today in class we talked about a special little frog that is native to Puerto Rico.

Ask your student:
  • What is a coquí?  What does it sound like?  (A coquí is a small frog that is native to Puerto Rico.  It "sings" all night long, making a noise that sounds like "co-keeeeey".)
  • Did you find the sound of the coquí relaxing?  (A lot of Puerto Ricans find the song of the coquí very relaxing and they enjoy falling asleep to the coquí's lullaby.  Listen to the sound of the coquí in this video).

  • Can you sing the "coquí" song that you learned in class?  (Watch this video below)

This week, we continued our new, short unit!  We continued learning about direction words (up, down, in, out) in the context of playing on a playground.

  • What did you make in Spanish class to help you remember the new words you learned today? (We made slide with picture wheel to review the vocabulary words.  Students brought it home along with the small book we made last week.)

Today in class, we continued learning about community related vocabulary words in Spanish.  We reviewed all of the vocabulary we've been learning with a game.

Ask your student:
  • Which building did you make for the game?  Which person were you?  (To practice the vocabulary, each student was assigned to draw a different place in the community.  Once we had our places drawn, each student was assigned a person to represent.)

  • We had to add a few new places for our game!

Homework:
  • Practice some of our vocabulary words (places in the community) with THIS video.

Kindergarten: May 4, 2016

Today, we continued to practice and review the animal action words.  We used our "amigos" (stuffed animal friends) to practice the vocabulary.  We also learned about one last animal and we finished our animal books.

  • Can you show me your Spanish book about animals? (This week, students brought home the small book we've been working on over the past few weeks.  You can look at the book together.  There's an English translation of everything on the last page.)
