5th and 6th Grade: February 27, 2019

This week, we read through the rest of the Óscar stories students have been writing in class.  Like last week, I loved seeing everyone's creativity! 

Students voted for their favorite story (not their own!) and while every story received votes from others, the winning story was..........

    Today in class we continued learning vocabulary to describe people.  This week we started talking about special features.

    In Spanish class today, we started a new unit!  We'll be learning all about Poor Enzo and the problems he has. 

    We continued practicing our beginning of class routine (days of the week, months, weather vocabulary), and began learning all numbers 1-100.

    • Who is Enzo?  What problems does he have?  (Enzo is a Mr. Potato Head toy.  He has many problems--he doesn't have eyes, he doesn't have ears, etc...  Today in class, we helped him out a bit.)

    This week, we continued our new unit.  We'll be reading a short story and learning a traditional song for making hot chocolate.

    • Who was the "estrellita" today?  (We're working our way through second turns.)
    • What was the song about in Spanish class?  (Traditional Mexican hot chocolate isn't made with a powder.  They melt chocolate into warm milk and sing a song as they heat it up.  THIS is the video we watched in class *YouTube Link*)

          This week, students began class by working on their Óscar el Flamenco stories.  We'll read those stories together next week.  Then, we looked at the "Super Siete" (Super Seven) verbs in Spanish.  We will use these verbs to write short stories over the coming weeks.

            This semester, our (HC)2 group will be memorizing Psalm 23 in English.  In 2nd-6th grade, we will also be memorizing the passage in Spanish.  Everyone will memorize the first verse, but I'll post an audio version of the entire Psalm for students who want a challenge in Spanish!

              5th and 6th Grade: February 6, 2019

              After two weeks off (missing class due to the 2 hour delay, and then a snow day) it was great to see everyone again!

              This week, we quickly reviewed the mini magazine about Andean Flamingos, read a fictitious story about a flamingo, and worked to write our own endings to the story.

              Ask your student
              • Tell me about the flamingo story from Spanish class today.    
                • Oscar the Flamingo lives in the Andes.  He wants to go on an adventure, so he heads to Michigan.  He doesn't like how cold it is in Michigan, so he tries to fly back to Chile, but they won't let flamingos in the airport.  So he heads to the zoo and meets with the other flamingos.  Students are working on the ending from there!  Next week, we'll read their stories in class.
