5th and 6th Grade: October 31, 2018

Today in class, continued our unit:  ¡Vamos a Chile!  (Let's go to Chile!)  We played a game to practice all of the vocabulary and geography of Chile that we have been studying.  Then, we learned about Chile's national food-empanadas!

Ask your student:
    • What is Chile's national food?  (It is the empanada.  It's like a "Hot Pocket."  It is meat or cheese wrapped up in bread.)
    • Do you remember which words you had during the "Headbands" game?  Who did you have to try to find?  (Everyone had to figure out what word was on their forehead and find their match. For example, the person with "la Capital" had to find "Santiago.")

      2nd and 3rd Grade: October 31, 2018

      Today in Spanish class, we continued talking about the difference between "quiero" (I want) and "quiere" (he/she wants), and "quieres" (you want).  We added the question "¿Qué quieres?  (What do you want?) and the phrase "de nada" (you're welcome).

      We continued learning our beginning of class routine (days of the week, months, weather vocabulary), and reviewed the numbers 1-20.

      • When you had Pablo the Pingüino (Pedro took a day off), what did you have to say after you gave him back to Señora Brouwer?  (We played a game passing the penguin around the class.  Students were able to practice saying "por favor, gracias, and de nada.")

        • What is the weather like Southern Chile?  (See if they can answer in Spanish!  En el sur, hace fresco.  Llueve mucho.  In the south, it is cool.  It rains a lot.)
        • Which region of Chile (north, central, south) would you most like to visit and why?  (Each of the three regions has a different climate and unique features!)

          We continued learning about Chile this week!  We focused on learning some weather-related vocabulary as next week, we'll be talking about Chile's weather and geography all in Spanish!

          • When it's fall here, what season is it in Chile?  (Since Chile is in the southern hemisphere, the seasons are the opposite.  So, it would be spring in Chile.)
          • Where is the desert in Chile?  (The Atacama Desert is in the northern part of Chile.)

          4th Grade: October 17, 2018

          Today in class, we continued playing a game to practice speaking "mucho español."  Students needed to be asking questions as well as answering them.

            Today in Spanish class, we continued speaking a lot of Spanish. We helped Pedro "build" a sandwich with some folded pieces of paper representing the different ingredients!

            We continued learning our beginning of class routine (days of the week, months, weather vocabulary), and reviewed the numbers 1-20.

            During class today, we began our first unit of the year!  Over the next few weeks, we'll be learning about Chile all in Spanish!  Today we started by talking about where Chile is located and what it looks like.  We also played "Veo, Veo" (I Spy) in Spanish.

            • Students are allowed to practice and "redo" Quia assignments as often as they like.  Practice is how we learn.
            • For each assignment completed, students will earn 2 "sellos o pegatinas" (stamps or stickers).  At the end of the year, they will be able to trade their stamps and stickers for small prizes.

            Today in Spanish class, we continued learning common Spanish vocabulary words with a familiar story. 

            We continued learning our beginning of class routine (days of the week, months, weather vocabulary), and reviewed the numbers 1-20. 

            Ask your student:
            • Do you remember what your story was about in Spanish today? (Using the same vocabulary as the 3 Bears, we illustrated a story about three cats that go for a walk and a dog that comes in their house and drinks their milk.)

            Each week, we'll listen to and sing along with a fun song in Spanish.  It's a fun way to get us all up and moving while learning more!  If possible, I'll post a link to the song here so you can listen at home as well!

            Homework:
            Occasionally, I will post links to videos, songs, or other resources for you to watch with your child over the week.  This is not required homework, but it is an opportunity to provide exposure to Spanish during the week.
            • Numbers 11-20.  In October, we learn/review numbers from 1-20.  I find that for most students, the numbers 11-20 are the most challenging to learn.  Practice these numbers with some of THESE GAMES.

              • A few notes about Quia...
                • If the game is not loading for you, it may be because you don't have the most up to date version of Adobe Flash.  If you get a message that the game can not load, you can click on "HTML Version."  The graphics aren't as fancy, but the content is the same.
                • Our older (4th-6th Grade) students each have a unique Quia username and password...one of your older siblings/children may have that.  However, for 2nd and 3rd grade, students do NOT need to log in to play Quia games.  Just follow the link and begin the game.

            Kindergarten: October 3, 2018

            Today in Spanish class, we continued learning colors with our short story, Olivia y los Pájaros.  We also got to practice a fire drill during Spanish class. 

            Ask your student:

            • What did you color in Spanish class?  Did it matter what colors you used?  (Students began coloring their own "Olivia y los Pájaros" book.  We had to use the right colors so our illustrations would match the story.  Next week, students will bring these books home to share with you!).
            • What do you do for a fire drill?  (We lined up quietly and walked outside.  Then we stood in a line quietly and waited until Mrs. Rynsburger said we could go back inside.)
