4/5/6: April 23, 2014

In class today, we worked on wrapping up a few loose ends.  Students also filled in a map with the Spanish-speaking countries and capitals of South America.

Next week, we'll spend the entire class period ONLY speaking in Spanish!  We'll have plenty of songs, games, and activities set up with some Spanish-English vocabulary signs posted to help everyone be successful!

Ask your student:
  • How well do you think you knew the countries and capitals of South America?  (Students filled out a map in class today to earn some extra stickers!)

2/3: April 23, 2014

Today in class, we started our final unit.  We'll be talking about the Coquí of Puerto Rico.

Ask your student:
  • What is a coquí?  (It is a small frog.  They only live in Puerto Rico and they make a unique noise.  It sounds like they say "co-quí, co-quí.")

Today's Vocabulary
  • el coquí - the coqui, a small Puerto Rican frog
  • el animal - the animal 
  • salta - he/she jumps
  • canta - he/she sings
  • dice - he/she says
  • la rana - the frog

  • Practice the numbers Spanish numbers from 0-60 with these games!
    • As a challenge we tried playing THIS game as a class!

1st Grade: April 23, 2014

In class this week, started our final unit in class.  We'll be talking all about different forms of transportation.

Ask your student:
  • You talked about 4 forms of transportation in Spanish class (plane, train, boat, car)  Which one is your favorite?  (We'll add a few more to the list next week!)

Kindergarten: April 23, 2014

Today in class, we started learning some new words for our final unit!  We'll be learning the names of a few common shapes in Spanish.  Students will be bringing home a book to share with you next week.

Ask your student:
  • You looked at a small book in Spanish class.  What was it about?  (We looked at a small book that featured lots of different shapes.  On each page, students had a specific shape that they were looking for!)
This week's vocabulary:
  • ¿Cuántos? - How many?
  • el círculo - the circle
  • el cuadrado - the square
  • el triángulo - the triangle
  • el rectángulo - the rectangle
Homework:

4/5/6 Grade: April 16, 2014

In class today, we learned the how 5 de mayo celebrations are similar and different in the US and Mexico.

Ask your student:
  • What is the history of the 5 de mayo holiday?  (In Mexico, it's a national holiday.  Government officials organize speeches and in some places, they reenact the battle.  In the US, it's more of a cultural celebration.  Different community groups organize parties to celebrate Mexican-American culture.  People don't really mention the battle.)

Today in class, we listened to the story of the Good Samaritan in Spanish.

Ask your student:
  • What does "No puedo ayudar" mean?  Why is that important in the story?  (It means "I can't help."  It's important because in the story two men refused to help the man who had been robbed.  Finally the Good Samaritan came and helped him.)
Today's vocabulary:
  • We reviewed all of our vocabulary from the past 3 weeks.  All of those words are used in this version of the story: 


Homework:

  • Can you show me the picture you drew in class?  (On the front side, students drew and labeled their immediate families.  On the backs, they had space for extended family members.  Not everyone was able to finish in class.)

  • You learned a new song/rhyme in Spanish class today.  What song is it like in English?  (It's like the  "Who stole the cookies from the cookie jar?" chant.)

4/5/6: El Jarabe Tapatío~The Mexican Hat Dance

This is one of the most well known traditional Mexican dances.  It is often performed at fiestas not only in Mexico, but also in the US!
