5th and 6th Grade: March 11, 2020

This week, we read a short descriptive paragraph together to prepare for writing our own paragraphs in Spanish.  (Don't worry 5th and 6th grade, we'll start the Locura de Marzo song voting next week!  You can check out the songs HERE)

Ask your student:
  • What was the reading activity you did in Spanish class today? (We read the paragraph together to make sure everyone understood the Spanish vocabulary.  Then we changed one word in each sentence to create a completely new story.) 
    Vocabulary:
    Words in bold are new this week, others are review
    • el cuchador - the spork
      • la cuchara - the spoon
      • el tenedor - the fork
    • le gusta - he/she likes
      • leer - to read
    • tiene miedo - he/she is afraid 
      • tiene miedo de los cuchillos de plástico - he/she is afraid of plastic knives
    • puede - he/she can or "is able"
      • puede nadar - he/she is able to swim
      • no puede cortar comida - he/she isn't able to cut food
    • hace - he/she makes
    • Super Seven verbs
      • hay - there is/there are
      • es - he/she is is
      • está en - he/she is located in 
      • tiene - he/she has
      • va a - he/she goes to
      • quiere - he/she wants
        • quiere ser - he/she wants to be

    Song of the Week
    Each week, we'll listen to and sing along with a fun song in Spanish.  It's a fun way to get us all up and moving while learning more!  If possible, I'll post a link to the song here so you can listen at home as well!

      • Language Practice

    • Bible Memory Verse (ongoing, second semester) This semester, our (HC)2 group will be memorizing a passage from Jeremiah 17.  In Spanish class, we will also be memorizing verse 7 in Spanish in January.  We'll add more each month.

      •  A few notes about homework
        • In 5th and 6th grade, there will be a Spanish homework assignment nearly every week.  In general, I will use online activities for our homework assignments.  These assignments will give students one extra opportunity during the week to practice Spanish.  Taking advantage of the extra practice helps language learning to "stick" more. 
      • Online assignments:
        • Students are allowed to practice and "redo" assignments as often as they like.  Practice is how we learn.
        • For each assignment completed, students will earn 2 "sellos o pegatinas" (stamps or stickers).  At the end of the year, they will be able to trade their stamps and stickers for small prizes.
