2nd and 3rd Grade: December 5, 2018

In Spanish class today, we continued talking about piñatas, but specifically talked about the tradition of having Christmas piñatas in Mexico.

We continued learning our beginning of class routine (days of the week, months, weather vocabulary), and reviewed the numbers 1-30.

Ask your student:
  • How do people in Mexico decide how many times you get to hit a piñata? (They have a song they sing!  When the song is over, so is your turn!  Click HERE to listen to the song.)
Vocabulary:
Words in bold are new this week, others are review
  • dulces - sweets/candy
  • fruta - fruit
  • monedas - coins
  • nueces - nuts
  • tradicional - traditional
  • moderna - modern
  • grande - big
  • pequeño - small
  • es - he/she/it is
  • tiene - he/she/it has
  • quiere - he/she wants
  • hay - there is/there are
    • no hay - there isn't/there aren't
  • ¿Cuántos? - How many?
  • ¿Cuántos hay? - How many are there?

Song of the Week
Each week, we'll listen to and sing along with a fun song in Spanish.  It's a fun way to get us all up and moving while learning more!  If possible, I'll post a link to the song here so you can listen at home as well!
Bible Verse:
This semester, our (HC)2 group will be memorizing a passage from Matthew 25.  In 2nd and 3rd grade, we will also be memorizing part of Matthew 25:40 in Spanish.
  • Cada vez que ustedes hicieron algo por mis hermanos más pequeños, también lo hicieron por mí.  Mateo 25:40 (veinticinco versículo cuarenta).
  • Audio version
Homework:
Occasionally, I will post links to videos, songs, or other resources for you to watch with your child over the week.  This is not required homework, but it is an opportunity to provide exposure to Spanish during the week.
  • Video/Listening Practice
    • VIDEO:  Pedro Makes a Sandwich!  (Students, see how much you can understand!  Parents, you can click on "CC" to see Spanish captions with the English translation.)
  • NUMBER Practice:   In October, we learn/review numbers from 1-20.  I find that for most students, the numbers 11-20 are the most challenging to learn.  Use some the of the games below to practice and review at home.
  • Previous Assignment (great review during this whole unit):  play this short game to practice the word "hay."  CLICK HERE
    • A few notes about Quia...
      • If the game is not loading for you, it may be because you don't have the most up to date version of Adobe Flash.  If you get a message that the game can not load, you can click on "HTML Version."  The graphics aren't as fancy, but the content is the same.
      • Our older (4th-6th Grade) students each have a unique Quia username and password...one of your older siblings/children may have that.  However, for 2nd and 3rd grade, students do NOT need to log in to play Quia games.  Just follow the link and begin the game.
