5th and 6th Grade: January 31, 2018

This week, we continued reading the book Eduardo, la piñata.  

Ask your student:
  • What was Eduardo la piñata doing as Olivia and Javi searched for him?  (He was going from store to store buying what he needed to make a sandwich.).
Vocabulary:

    • Cultural note:  In Spanish speaking countries, a supermarket only has groceries and other household supplies (cleaning supplies, soap, lotion, toothpaste, paper towels, etc...) a store like Meijer which also sells clothes, electronics, toys, etc... would be called "el hipermercado."

Grammar Concept
Me gusta vs Me gustan
  • In Spanish you use "Me gusta" (I like) when what you like is either an action or a singular noun.
    • Examples:
    • Me gusta cantar.  = I like to sing.  (sing = action)
    • Me gusta la casa.  = I like the house.  (the house = singular)
    • Me gusta limpiar la casa.  = I like to clean the house.  (I like "to clean" = action)
    • Me gustar leer los libros.  = I like to read the books.  (I like "to read" = action...even though books is plural, the action comes first.)
  • In Spanish you use "Me gustan" (I like) when what you like is plural.
    • Examples:
    • Me gustan las piñatas. = I like the piñatas.  (piñatas = plural)
    • Me gustan los zapatos.  = I like the shoes.  (shoes = plural)

4th Grade: January 31, 2018

Today in class, we continued having "Market Day" conversations in class.

Ask your student:
  • What does "Se Habla Español" mean?  Did you have a sign out that said "Se Habla Español"? (It means "Spanish Spoken."  Several students chose to set out this sign last week so that they could have some Spanish-speaking customers (Señora Brouwer) visit their shop.)

We continued practicing school-related vocabulary words with  a silly story about Pedro the mouse. As a class, we worked together to write new "chapers" for the story.

  • What was your Pedro story about? (In our story poor Pedro never had exactly what he needed for school.  He definitely didn't have a good day!)

This week, we learned all about the sense of taste.

  • Look at this picture...which foods are dulce?  Which ones are salado?  (Dulce is sweet and salado is salty)

Kindergarten: January 31, 2018

In class today, we continued learning the vocabulary to talk about getting ready to play out in the snow!

Ask your student:
  • How fast did you get your snow clothes on?  (To practice our vocabulary words, we played Simon Says with our snow clothes.  Then we tried to see how quickly everyone in the class could get all of their gear on!  This week, everyone had it on within 2 min and 25 seconds.  Maybe we'll see if we can beat that next week!)

  • Where did Olivia and Javi go while searching for the piñata?  (They visited a lot of small shops around town...a vegetable shop, dairy shop, bakery, supermarket, and finally a piñata shop.)
  • Why didn't they break the piñata?  (While the piñata was running away, all of the treats fell out!  Since there were no candies and fruits inside, they didn't break the piñata.)

4th Grade: January 24, 2018

Our class did not meet today due to Market Day.  I loved seeing everyone's creativity at Market Day, and I enjoyed speaking español with you!  We'll continue learning more "Mercado" vocabulary next week!

This week, we learned all about the sense of touch and different textures.  We played a guessing game to review the texture vocabulary words.

Ask your student:
  • What was the game you played in Spanish class?  Do you remember what object you touched?  (Play at home!  Put an object inside a bag or box and describe it in Spanish.  Is it suave (smooth) or áspero (bumpy)?  Is it blando (soft and squishy) or duro (hard)?)

5th and 6th Grade: January 17, 2018

This week, we started reading the book Eduardo, la piñata.  The book started off with an interesting twist of events!

Ask your student:
  • What sorts of things did Olivia put in the piñata?  (The piñata had not only candies and suckers, but also apples, oranges, peanuts, and pieces of sugar cane.)
  • Who is Eduardo?  What do you know about him?  (Eduardo is a piñata.  In this silly short story, he is alive!  When he hears that Olivia wants to break him, he runs away!)
  • Who is Javi?  What do you know about him?  (Javi is a rabbit.  He is Olivia's friend and he also likes piñatas.)
