Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd Grade: April 15, 2020~Learn at Home

¡Hola amigos!  Pedro and I are sad we can't be at school with you, but we can still learn Spanish together!  We hope you enjoyed watching SALSA last week.  Here's another episode for this week!

1.  Opening Routine

• We start our classes by asking each other "¿Cómo estás?"  Watch this video to practice!

2.  Language Lesson

• You've worked hard all year learning new vocabulary words!  Let's have fun listening to those words in a short video!  Over the next few weeks, we'll be watching episodes of SALSA!  Today, the friends play hide and seek!
• Before you watch the video, find a red crayon or marker, a blue crayon or marker, a green crayon or marker, and a yellow crayon or marker.  As you watch the video, every time you hear the word "rojo" (red) hold up the red crayon, when you hear "azul" (blue) hold up the blue one, when you hear "verde" (green) hold up the green one, and when you hear "amarillo.

This week, we started a new unit.  We acted out the first part of a well known story--The Gingerbread Man.

This week, we finished our Snowman unit by drawing a snowman together as a class.  We even wrote about him together!

• How did you decide how to draw the snow man?  (Students took turns rolling a die.  Each roll corresponded to something we would draw.)
• What was your snowman like?  What part did you draw?  (It was a big snowman with a long orange hat, small eyes, no arms, and four buttons!  Everyone got to draw something!)

This week, we took a break from our snowman unit.  Our second and third grade students had the chance to learn about two silly characters today. They got to "meet" the characters that our 4th and 5th/6th grade classes created over the last few weeks.  Then, they got to vote for their favorite character.

Ask your student:

• Who were the two characters in Spanish class?  What were their problems?  (Alberto the cow didn't want to be a cow.  He wanted to be a dragon. Zara the fox had a secret portal to Mars.  We listened to these stories completely in Spanish!)

This week, we continued talking about silly snowmen in Spanish class!  We began by practicing numbers and counting buttons on snowmen, then we played a snowman guessing game.

Ask your student:

• What was the snowman guessing game you played in class?  (There were 15 snowmen on the screen.  Each one was unique.  Señora Brouwer described a snowman in Spanish, and students had to guess which one it was!  We also reversed the game and let students ask questions to try to discover which snowman it was.  We had a lot of fun speaking Spanish!)

We stared a new mini unit today!  We're still talking about animals, but this time, we'll be focusing on the coquí frog of Puerto Rico.

Ask your student:

• What is a coquí?  (A coquí is a type of frog that lives in Puerto Rico.)
• What does a coquí sound like?  (It sounds like it's saying "Co-quí, co-quí".  You can listen to THIS VIDEO.)
• How is a coquí different than other frogs?  (We learned a new word in Spanish that is fun to say=renacuajo.  Renacuajo means tadpole...but coquís don't go through the tadpole stage.  They hatch like miniature adult coquís.
