5th and 6th Grade: November 30, 2016

In class today, we finished our unit about Las Meninas.  As a class, we posed (again!) to take a Las Meninas picture.  We also looked at another artist's interpretation of the painting.

Ask your student:
  • What is this painting all about?  What is going on?  (Because Las Meninas is such a well known painting in Spanish art, many other artists have copied the painting and given it their own interpretation.  This is one of Pablo Picasso's many takes on the painting.  Can you find/identify everyone?)

4th Grade: November 30, 2016

Today in class we finished our unit "Las Islas" by talking about foods!  This week we talked about different things and places and different things to do on the islands.

 Ask your student:
  • What foods did you sample in class today?  What did you think about them?  (We sampled mangú (mashed plantain) and morir soñando (orange juice and milk drink).  The mangú got mixed reviews from the students, but almost everyone liked the morir soñando.  Many students wanted to make these recipes at home.  The recipes I used are linked in the Homework section.)
  • What word doesn't exist in Spanish?  (Just like we don't have a word for "mangú" they don't have a word for "fudge" in Spanish.  We describe mangú as mashed plantains.  In Spanish they would talk about fudge as a sweet made from chocolate and cream.)

2nd and 3rd Grade: November 30, 2016

In Spanish class today, we finished our unit about piñatas with some reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities focusing on the verbs "es" (he/she/it is) and "tiene" (he/she/it has).

Ask your student:
  • Can you describe this piñata in Spanish? (Es pequeña-It's small, Es moderna-It's modern; not a traditional style, Tiene dulces-It has candy.)

    • What was Joseph's job?  What action do we do when we say Joseph's name?  (He was a carpenter.  When we review our vocabulary words, we pretend to be carving something out of wood for Joseph.)

    Kindergarten: November 30, 2016

    This week, we learned some new Christmas words!  Next week, we'll learn some more words and sing songs to review the new Christmas words.

     Ask your student:
    • Do you remember what the "action" is for Joseph?  (Every time I say "José" in Spanish, students pretend to saw a piece of wood.  Since Joseph was a carpinter, the action helps us remember that José means Joseph.)

    Feliz Día de Acción de Gracias

    Happy Thanksgiving!

    In our kindergarten Spanish class, we are learning about shapes and colors in Spanish.  This week, we used those words to make a "pavo" (turkey)!



    Kindergarten students brought home a paper with shapes to color and cut out to create a small version of this turkey.  If you would like to print another copy, click HERE.

    4th Grade: November 16, 2016

    Today in class we continued our unit "Las Islas."  This week we talked about different things and places and different things to do on the islands.

    **NOTE** Next time (Nov 30), we will be sampling (very small portions) two different Dominican foods in class.  I will link the recipes I'll be using.  If your student has any allergies or food sensitivities, please let me know ahead of time.
    • Mangú Recipe (Traditional mashed plantain breakfast)
    • Morir Soñando Recipe (Traditional orange juice and milk drink.  Several students mentioned that they don't drink dairy milk, so I'll make two versions: one following the recipe listed, the other version replacing the milk and sugar with canned coconut milk.)
    Ask your student
    • What is a favorite sport on Mackinac Island?  How about the DR?  (Golf is popular on Mackinac Island, baseball is a favorite in the DR.)

    2nd and 3rd Grade: November 16, 2016

    In Spanish class today, we continued our unit about piñatas by focusing on the verb "es" (he/she/it is).

    (If you're looking for a fun activity to practice Spanish, check out this Turkey Pilgrim!)

    Ask your student:
    • What were traditional piñatas made of?  Why don't they make them like that anymore?  (Traditionally, piñatas were a clay pot.  They don't make them like that anymore because it was too dangerous and people got hurt from the sharp, broken, pot.)

      Kindergarten: November 16, 2016

      This week, we continued learning shapes and colors.  Using some simple shapes, we created a "Pilgrim Turkey"!  Students brought home a paper to make their own Pilgrim Turkey.  Click HERE for more information.
