Today in class we continued our unit "Las Islas."  This week we talked about different geographical features and animals on the islands.

Ask your student:

• What does "Hay un lago grande y dos islas pequeñas" mean?  What would you draw on this picture?  
  
  (This was similar to the listening activity we did in class.  Students would listen to a description and draw what I described.  In this case, they would draw a large lake and two small islands.)

• Where is the "triángulo grande"?  The "rectángulo pequeño?  Can you show me your picture from school?  (Every student drew a similar version of this picture as part of a listening activity in class...though we didn't get to all of the shapes.  The triángulo grande is the big triangle and the rectángulo pequeño is the the small rectangle.)

This week, we spent a little time reviewing verb phrases and what we already know about Don Quixote.  We learned a few new forms of the verb "to be" in Spanish.  After that, we used those verbs to learn about two other important characters in the story of Don Quixote.

• Who was Rocinante?  Who was Sancho Panza?   (Rocinante was Don Quixote's horse, Sancho Panza was his friend and shield bearer.)

Grammar Concept:

The verb "to be":  The verb "to be" is important in both Spanish and English.  Through this unit, we will be learning the various forms of the verb:

• I am = yo soy
• you are = tú eres
• he is = él es
• she is = ella es
• to be = ser (used in a phrase like "quiere ser" - he/she wants to be)

Review:  When you want to make a phrase with "quiere" or "puede" or "necesita," you have to add an "r" to the end of the he/she form of the verb.

• puede cocinar - he/she is able to cook

4th Grade: October 25, 2017

Today in class we began a new unit:  Las Islas.  In this 4 week unit, we'll be learning all about the Dominican Republic and contrasting it with what we know about Mackinac Island.  Today, we started by learning some key vocabulary words.

Ask your student:

• Is the Dominican Republic an island?  (The DR is a country.  It is located on an island.  The island is named "Hispaniola" or "La Española" in Spanish.)
• Based on what you've learned so far, how are the DR (Hispaniola) and Mackinac Island similar?  How are they different?  (They are both located on islands.  The DR is on an island in the sea, Mackinac Island is in a lake.)

While we continued to practice phrases with "quiere" and "puede,"  we also began learning about one of the most famous characters in Spanish literature--Don Quixote.

• Who was Señor Quexada?  Who was Don Quixote?   (Señor Quexada was a character in a book.  He read so many books about knights, that he went crazy and said he was a knight named Don Quixote.)

Today in class, we completed our first unit of the year.  We learned a few new vocabulary words and then read a short, Spanish version of Daniel in the Lions' Den.
