4th Grade: November 2, 2016

Today in class we continued our unit "Las Islas."  This week we talked about different geographical features and animals on the islands.

Ask your student:
  • What does "Hay un lago grande y dos islas pequeñas" mean?  What would you draw on this picture?  
    (This was similar to the listening activity we did in class.  Students would listen to a description and draw what I described.  In this case, they would draw a large lake and two small islands.)

  • What are some interesting animals in the DR?  (There are crocodiles, iguanas, and flamingos!)

  • This semester, we'll be memorizing Colossians 3:16-17 as an (HC)2 group.  In Spanish class, we will also focus on memorizing just verse 17 in Spanish.

2nd and 3rd Grade: November 2, 2016

In Spanish class today, we began a new unit!  Over the next few weeks, we'll be talking about piñatas as we learn about the important Spanish verbs "tiene" (has) and "es" (is).

Ask your student:
  • What are some things you know about piñatas?  What are some things you want to know about piñatas?  (We talked about this together as a class.  Over the next few weeks, we'll learn more about what a piñata is made of, and what sorts of surprises it has in other places.)

    1st Grade: November 2, 2016

    This week, started a new unit:  Mi Familia/My Family.  During this unit, we'll be learning how to describe our families in Spanish.

    Ask your student:
    • Do you remember how to say "mom" and "dad" in Spanish?  (la mamá-mom; el papá-dad)

    Kindergarten: November 2, 2016

    This week, we continued learning shapes and colors.  Next week, we'll begin using those words to talk about some fall/harvest and Thanksgiving related vocabulary.

    Ask your student:
    • Where is the "triángulo grande"?  The "rectángulo pequeño?  Can you show me your picture from school?  (Every student drew their own version of this picture as part of a listening activity in class.  The triángulo grande is the big triangle and the rectángulo pequeño is the the small rectangle.)

    5th/6th Grade: October 26, 2016

    In class today, we began a new unit.  This week and next week we'll be learning some location words in Spanish.  Then, we'll use those words to talk about a famous Spanish painting!

    Ask your student:
    • What did you talk about with stuffed animals?  (We played with stuffed animals in class!  I would say a sentence in Spanish and act it out with stuffed animals.  Next week, students will have the chance to practice vocabulary with stuffed animals too!)

      4th Grade: October 26, 2016

      Today in class we began a new unit:  Las Islas.  In this 4 week unit, we'll be learning all about the Dominican Republic and contrasting it with what we know about Mackinac Island.  Today, we started by learning some key vocabulary words.

      Ask your student:
      • Is the Dominican Republic an island?  (The DR is a country.  It is located on an island.  The island is named "Hispaniola" or "La Española" in Spanish.)
      • Based on what you've learned so far, how are the DR (Hispaniola) and Mackinac Island similar?  How are they different?  (They are both located on islands.  The DR is on an island in the sea, Mackinac Island is in a lake.)

          Kindergarten: October 26, 2016

          Over the next few weeks in Spanish class, we'll be learning shapes, colors, and using those words to talk about some fall/harvest and Thanksgiving related vocabulary.

          Ask your student:
          • Where is the "círculo grande"?  The "círculo pequeño?  Where is the "cuadrado grande"?  The "cuadrado pequeño"?  (As we learn new words, we try to "recycle" words we learned in the past.  This week, we practiced our new shape vocabulary while reviewing body parts!  The círculo grande is on the pierna, the círculo pequeña is on the pelo, the cuadrado grande is on the estómago, and the cuadrado pequeño is on the oreja.)

          In class today, we talked about how Chilean's celebrate Independence Day.

          Ask your student:
          • How did you "celebrate" in Spanish class today?  (We listened to "La Cueca" music and watched a video of the dance.  We also played a simplified version of "Rayuela."  We didn't try any empanadas though!  If you feel like trying a new food with your family, check out THIS recipe.)

          Today in class, we completed our first unit of the year.  We learned a few new vocabulary words and then read a short, Spanish version of Daniel in the Lions' Den.

          Today in Spanish class, we were entertained as Pedro and his abuela (grandma) acted out a restaurant skit for us.  We wrote our own skits and we will be sharing them with the class next week.
