4th, 5th, 6th Grade: September 2, 2015

Today in Spanish class, we started off by drawing pictures.  The students filled their papers with drawings and symbols to represent things that are important to them.  Each week, we'll look at one student's poster and learn about him or her...all in Spanish!  After that, we spent a little time talking about cognates and how they can help us understand Spanish.  We were even able to read (and understand!) a few advertisements in Spanish using cognates to help us.

Ask your student:
  • What is a cognate? (It's a word that looks and/or sounds the same in both English and Spanish)
  • Who was this week's "amigo del día"?  Whose drawing did you look at?  What did you learn about that person?  (This week, we looked at Pedro's poster.  Pedro is Señora Brouwer's stuffed mouse.  He likes to eat cheese.)

This week's vocabulary:
  • ¿Qué te gusta hacer? - What do you like to do?
  • Me gusta - I like
  • comer - to eat
  • queso - cheese
  • le gusta - he/she likes

Homework:
  • This year, we will be using a website called "Quia" for our homework assignments.  Parents should have received an email with username and password information.  Students, if you were here last year, your username and password is the same as last year.  If you did not receive an email with log in information, please email me and I can get you that information.  (ambrouwer@hollandchristian.org)
    • Click HERE to access the Quia assignment for this week.

3rd Grade: September 2, 2015

Today in Spanish class, we focused on learning one very important word...hay.  We played a memory game to practice using the word "hay" in context.

Ask your student:

  • What does "hay" mean in Spanish?  (Hay means "there is or there are".  Since the letter "h" is always silent in Spanish, it sounds more like "aye!")
This week's vocabulary:

  • hay - there is, there are

Over the course of the year, we'll be practicing the numbers from 1-100.  Today we started by playing some games to practice the numbers 1-15, and we'll work our way up to 100 by the spring.

Ask your student:
  • Do you remember how to say "five" in Spanish?  (Cinco.  We will be practicing saying numbers...not only in order (counting), but also recognizing them out of order).

Today's vocabulary:
  • Numbers 1-15
Homework:

Today, we did not have Spanish class.  Instead, we rode a bus to the high school for Convocation. For some of our 1st grade students, it was their first time ever on a school bus! At Convocation we were able to praise God and pray together with the entire Holland Christian community.

Today in Spanish class, we started learning a few basic words and procedures in Spanish class.  Next week, we'll begin learning some basic greetings in Spanish.

Ask your student:
  • What do you do in Spanish if you don't understand what Señora Brouwer is saying?  (You tap your fist on the opposite hand.)
  • Who is Pedro?  (He's a little mouse who helps to translate what Señora Brouwer says into English)

This week's vocabulary:
  • se levanta - he/she stands up
  • se sienta - he/she sits down
  • rápidamente - quickly
  • lentamente - slowly
Homework:
