This week we returned to talking about an "Amigo del día" (Friend of the day).  Over the next weeks, we'll continue learning more about each other as we learn how to describe people, their likes, dislikes and wants.

•  A few notes about homework
• In 4th grade, there will be a Spanish homework assignment nearly every week.  In general, I will use online activities for our homework assignments.  These assignments will give students one extra opportunity during the week to practice Spanish.  Taking advantage of the extra practice helps language learning to "stick" more. 
• Online assignments:
• Students are allowed to practice and "redo" assignments as often as they like.  Practice is how we learn.
• For each assignment completed, students will earn 2 "sellos o pegatinas" (stamps or stickers).  At the end of the year, they will be able to trade their stamps and stickers for small prizes.

2nd Grade: May 18, 2016

Today in class, we played Toma Todo, a traditional Mexican game.  The spinning tops we used in class were from Mexico, but you can follow THESE DIRECTIONS to make your own version of the game to play at home!

Spring Break Activity Ideas!

If you're looking for some fun, Spanish-related activities to try over Spring Break, try one of these:

1. Out and About
1. Local Library:  Many of our Holland area libraries have great Spanish collections!  Ask the children's librarian to show you where to find books, CDs, or videos in Spanish.  You'll find some of your favorite English books translated into Spanish, and you'll discover some new books as well!
2. Visit a local Mexican Supermercado.  What things are similar to the supermarket your family usually goes to?  What things are different?  With your parents permission, find something new to buy and try out at home...maybe a fruit or vegetable you haven't seen before, or even a sweet treat!
2. Staying Home
1. Go on a Spanish Hunt around your house.  Do you have anything in your house written in Spanish?  You'd be surprised just how much there is!  (If you need help getting started, check the labels on various soaps, cleaning supplies, etc...)  Where was the most surprising place you found Spanish in your home?
2. If you watch a DVD over break, check to see if you can watch in Spanish!  Many DVDs have a Spanish language audio track.  Older students, you can even turn on the Spanish subtitles and read along! (Check under the "options" menu for different audio tracks and subtitles.)
3. Getting Crafty
1. Huichol yarn painting  (Instead of a peel and stick tile, you can also use a layer of glue on cardboard.)
2. Mexican tissue paper flowers
4. Cooking!  Try these traditional Easter/Springtime foods!
1. Torrijas:  Spanish style French toast, traditionally eaten at Easter.
2. Chilacayote:  A Mexican beverage...made from squash!

2nd Grade: March 16, 2016

This week, we started a new unit!  We'll be learning the vocabulary words to tell the story of David and Goliath in Spanish!

Ask your student:

• How can you remember that the word for "sheep" is "oveja" (pronounced "OBEY-ha")? (Sheep have to obey their shepherd, just like we are God's sheep and Jesus is our Good Shepherd.  Also, in Spanish, sheep say "Beeeeee" instead of "baaa."  You can have fun saying OBEEEEEEY-ha and sounding like sheep!)

• What is the "student-teacher challenge"? (Señora Brouwer puts pictures of the vocabulary words on the board.  One student comes up, and Señora Brouwer says words in Spanish and that student has to tap the right picture on the board.  The student gets 6 words and has to get 4 correct to "win"...otherwise Señora Brouwer wins that round.  So far, the students are winning 5-0!)

Today in class, we reviewed the Christmas vocabulary words that we learned last week.  We also reviewed Spanish numbers from 1-50 with a Christmas BINGO game.

Ask your student:

• How close were you to getting a BINGO?  Did you have a second BINGO? (Everyone had at least one BINGO by the end of class!)

• Las Posadas:  In second grade, we talked about the Mexican tradition of "Las Posadas."  THIS LIST includes a lot of ideas for learning more about this tradition.
• Make a Posadas Piñata Ornaments

• Belenes:  In fourth, fifth, and sixth grade, we learned that many families in Spain decorate their homes with Belenes...or scenes of Bethlehem (not just the stable).  Design one of your own!
