5th and 6th Grade: November 26, 2014

Today in class, we continued our first unit:  Mi rutina, la rutina de otros (My Routine and the Routine of Others).  Today we focused on things we do in the evening.


Ask your student:
  • At what time do we (usually) eat dinner?  Can you say that time in Spanish?   (See Review of Time below.  We have learned how to say simple phrases such as six o'clock and six thirty.)
  • Can you tell me one thing you do in the evening in Spanish?  (See vocabulary list below for vocabulary.)

Today's vocabulary:
  • por la noche = at night/in the evening
  • como la cena = I eat dinner
  • me pongo los pijamas = I put on my pajamas
  • me acuesto = I go to bed/I lie down
  • me duermo = I fall asleep
Review of time:
  • A las seis = at six o'clock
  • A las seis y media = at six thirty
  • A las ocho = at eight o'clock
  • A las ocho y media = at eight thirty

Homework:

3rd and 4th Grade: November 26, 2014

Today in class we continued our unit "Las Islas."  This week we talked about different things and places and different things to do on the islands.

**NOTE** Next week, we will be sampling (very small portions) two different Dominican foods in class.  I will link the recipes I'll be using.  If your student has any allergies or food sensitivities, please let me know ahead of time.

  • Mangú Recipe (Traditional mashed plantain breakfast)
  • Morir Soñando Recipe (Traditional orange juice and milk drink.  Several students mentioned that they don't drink dairy milk, so I'll make two versions: one following the recipe listed, the other version replacing the milk and sugar with canned coconut milk.)


Ask your student:

  • What is a favorite sport on Mackinac Island?  How about the DR?  (Golf is popular on Mackinac Island, baseball is a favorite in the DR.)

Today in class we continued to talk about what students are thankful for...specifically, we talked about the delicious foods we'll enjoy on Thanksgiving.

Ask your student:
  • What food are you most excited about eating tomorrow?  Do you remember how to say it in Spanish.  (The vocabulary list below may be helpful!)

This week's vocabulary:

  • What room of the house did you learn about in class this week?  (Our new words were "la sala" - the living room, and "el jardín" - the yard.)

Kindergarten: November 26, 2014

This week, we continued talking about our families in Spanish.   Everyone drew a picture of their family and labeled it in Spanish.  Click HERE for more information about our "Family" unit.

Ask your student:
  • Do you remember what "el abuelo" and "la abuela" mean in Spanish?  (the grandpa and grandma)
  • Let's look at the picture you drew of our family!

Today in class, we continued our first unit:  Mi rutina, la rutina de otros (My Routine and the Routine of Others).  Today we focused on things we do in the afternoon.


Ask your student:

Today in class we continued our unit "Las Islas."  This week we talked about different geographical features and animals on the islands.  We also read some short paragraphs together as a class.

  • What room of the house did you learn about in class this week?  (Our new word was "la cocina" - the kitchen.  We also reviewed the words from last week:  el baño - the bathroom, el dormitorio - the bedroom)

Kindergarten: November 19, 2014

This week, we continued talking about our families in Spanish.   We also spent a little time reviewing our Bible verse in Spanish (and, everyone is doing a GREAT JOB memorizing it!)  Click HERE for more information about our "Family" unit.

Ask your student:
  • Do you remember what "YO" means in Spanish?  (I or me.  It's also in our song, "Soy Yo"!)
  • How many people are in our family?  Can you name everyone in Spanish?  (Example:  la mamá, el papá, el hermano, yo...the mom, the dad, the brother, and me.)
This week's vocabulary:
  • yo - I/me
  • la bebé - the (girl) baby

Today in class, we began a new unit:  Mi rutina, la rutina de otros (My Routine and the Routine of Others).  We will be learning a lot of daily routine vocabulary and how our daily routine differs from routines in other countries.  Today we focused on things we do to get ready in the morning.

Ask your student:
  • What do you like to drink with breakfast in the morning? (We learned 3 options in class:  agua-water, leche-milk, jugo-juice. )

Today's vocabulary:
  • por la mañana = in the morning
  • me levanto = I get up
  • me visto = I get dressed
  • me lavo la cara = I wash my face

3rd and 4th Grade: November 12, 2014

Today in class we began a new unit:  Las Islas.  In this 4 week unit, we'll be learning all about the Dominican Republic and contrasting it with what we know about Mackinac Island.  Today, we started by learning some key vocabulary words and doing a listening activity.

Ask your student:
  • What does "Hay un lago grande y dos islas pequeñas" mean?  What would you draw on this picture?  
    (This was similar to the listening activity we did in class.  Students would listen to a description and draw what I described.  In this case, they would draw a large lake and two small islands.)
