1st Grade: September 25, 2013

Today in Spanish class, students had the option to choose a "Spanish name" to use in class.  Then, we continued our unit:  La Mariposa Monarca (The Monarch Butterfly).  Today we focused on talking about the butterfly and migration stages:  la mariposa, y la migración.

Ask your student:
  • Did you choose a Spanish name?  What is it?  (Hopefully, your child remembers!  If not, I have them written down.  Feel free to email me.)
  • When do the Monarch butterflies go to Mexico?  Why?  (They go in the winter because it's too cold in Michigan.)

Today's vocabulary:
  • la mariposa - the butterfly
  • sale - he/she goes out
  • descansa - he/she rests
  • vuela - he/she flies
  • la migración - the migration 
  • el invierno - the winter
  • tiene frío - he/she is cold
  • cuarto - fourth

Today in class, we continued our unit:  Ropa y Colores (Clothing and Colors).  Today we reviewed the color vocabulary and then we learned a few clothing words.

Ask your student:
  • In Spanish, can you name something that you're wearing?  What color is it?  (See the vocabulary list to give your child some hints.)
Today's vocabulary:
  • la camiseta - the t-shirt (short sleeve)
  • la chaqueta - the jacket
  • los pantalones cortos - the shorts
  • la falda - the skirt
  • el vestido - the dress
Review Clothing
  • el gorro - the hat
  • los pantalones - the pants
  • la camisa - the shirt
  • los zapatos - the shoes
  • los calcetines - the socks
Review Vocabulary (Colors)
  • blanco = white
  • negro = black
  • rojo = red
  • rosado = pink  (rosa is also used for "pink" in some countries)
  • anaranjado = orange (naranja is also used for "orange" in some countries)
  • amarillo = yellow
  • verde = green 
  • azul = blue
  • morado = purple
  • gris = gray
  • marrón = brown (café and pardo are also used for "brown" in some countries)

Today in class, we continued our first unit:  Mi rutina, la rutina de otros (My Routine and the Routine of Others).  Today we focused on things we do in the evening.


Ask your student:
  • At what time do we (usually) eat dinner?  Can you say that time in Spanish?   (See Review of Time below.  We have learned how to say simple phrases such as six o'clock and six thirty.)
  • Can you tell me one thing you do in the evening in Spanish?  (See vocabulary list below for vocabulary.)

Today's vocabulary:
  • por la noche = at night/in the evening
  • como la cena = I eat dinner
  • me pongo los pijamas = I put on my pajamas
  • me acuesto = I go to bed/I lie down
  • me duermo = I fall asleep
Review of time:
  • A las seis = at six o'clock
  • A las seis y media = at six thirty
  • A las ocho = at eight o'clock
  • A las ocho y media = at eight thirty

Today, we spent some time talking about Chile's flag and their national food (empanadas).  We played a short matching game in Spanish to review everything we have learned so far.  Finally, we practiced reading in Spanish!  We read some short paragraphs in Spanish to review what we've talked about so far.

Ask your student:
  • What is Chile's flag like?  (See if they can answer in Spanish!  Hay tres colores:  rojo, azul, y blanco.  Tiene una estrella.  It has three colors:  red, blue, and white.  It has a star.)
  • What is Chile's national food?  (It is the empanada.  It's like a "Hot Pocket."  It is meat or cheese wrapped up in bread.)

Today's vocabulary:

  • la bandera - the flag
  • la estrella - the star
  • la empanada - the empanada (like a Hot Pocket)
  • la carne - the meat
  • el queso - the cheese
  • el pan - the bread
  • dentro de - inside of

Homework:
  • Sing along with our song:  Eres digno de alabar (Worthy of Praise)
  • Review weather and seasons by listening to this song.
  • Practice our vocabulary with this Quia game:  FLASHCARDS/MATCHING
  • Complete this assignment on Quia.  (Worth 2 pegatinas!)  If you get stuck, you can go back and look at our SLIDE SHOW from class.

2/3: September 18, 2013

Today in class, we continued our first unit:  Mi rutina, la rutina de otros (My Routine and the Routine of Others).  Today we focused on things we do in the afternoon.


Ask your student:
  • Each week, we practice Spanish numbers.  What is your favorite game to play?   (Our three main games are "the number line game"-students try to guess my number, "the matching game"-a "Memory" style game, and "the towel game"-two students hold up a towel, and two other students stand on opposite sides, facing each other.  Each one holds up a number.  When the towel is dropped, the students who are facing each other need to say the number that the other one is holding.)
  • Can you tell me one thing you do in the afternoon in Spanish?  (See vocabulary list below for vocabulary.)

Today's vocabulary:
  • por la tarde = in the afternoon
  • voy a = I go to 
  • como el almuerzo = I eat lunch
  • juego con mis amigos = I play with my friends 
  • leo un libro = I read a book 
  • hago mi tarea = I do my homework 
Review of time:
  • A las doce = at noon/at twelve o'clock
  • A las doce y media = at twelve thirty
  • A la una = at one o'clock
  • A la una y media = at one thirty

  • What does Pedro do all day?  Watch THIS VIDEO to find out what Pedro does all day.  Use the worksheet we started in class to record your answers.

Today in Spanish class, we started off talking about the calendar and weather.  Then, we continued our new unit:  La Mariposa Monarca (The Monarch Butterfly).  Today we focused on talking about the caterpillar and chrysalis stages:  la oruga, y la crisálida.

Ask your student:
  • What color is Monarch caterpillar?  (Es amarillo, blanco, y negro. - It's yellow, white, and black.)
  • Do you remember what a Monarch caterpillar does after she sheds her skin?  (She eats the skin - Come la piel.)

Today's vocabulary:
  • la oruga - the caterpillar
  • la crisálida - the chrysalis
  • se quita - he/she takes off or sheds
  • es - he/she is (physical characteristics)

Today in class, continued our unit:  ¡Vamos a Chile!  (Let's go to Chile!)  First, we reviewed the vocabulary from last week.  Then, we learned all about the weather and geography of Chile.  Finally, we played a little game to review everything we have learned so far.

Ask your student:

  • What is the weather like Southern Chile?  (See if they can answer in Spanish!  En el sur, hace fresco.  Llueve mucho.  In the south, it is cool.  It rains a lot.)
  • What is the "Atacama"?  (Again see if your student can answer in Spanish!  Es un desierto.  Está en el norte.  No llueve.  It is a desert.  It is in the north.  It doesn't rain.)

Kindergarten: September 11, 2013

Today in class, we began our new unit:  Ropa y Colores (Clothing and Colors).  Today we focused on learning colors.  Over the next few weeks, we'll keep reviewing those words as we learn clothing vocabulary.

We also began learning a Bible verse in Spanish.  During the first semester, we will be learning Proverbs 3:5.  You can use this AUDIO SLIDE SHOW to hear the verse in Spanish as you and child practice at home.

Confía en el Señor de todo corazón.  Proverbios tres versículo cinco.

Ask your student:
  • Do you know how to say your favorite color in Spanish?  (See below for colors in Spanish.)
