1st Grade: January 22, 2020

Today in Spanish class, we continued talking about a potato named Enzo and the problems that he has.

Ask your student:
  • Who was the estrellita in class today?  (Each week, students will take turns being the estrellita - star - in Spanish class.  They get to sit in a special chair and be a special helper in the class. ) 
  • Can you show me the Enzo you drew in class today?  (Everyone drew their own Enzo in class today.  Everyone also told me something about Enzo in Spanish.)

This semester, our (HC)2 group will be memorizing a passage from Jeremiah 17.  In Spanish class, we will also be memorizing verse 7 in Spanish.

Kindergarten: January 22, 2020

This week, we continued our "Chocolate" unit.

Ask your student:
  • Who was the "estrellita" today?  (We're working our way through second turns.)
  • What was the story about in Spanish class?  (A girl, Carlota, has hot chocolate with her grandparents.  Her grandpa has a big cup.  His chocolate is hot.  Her grandma has a medium sized cup.  Her chocolate is cold.  Carlota's cup is small.  Her chocolate is perfect.)

      5th and 6th Grade: January 15, 2020

      This week, we continued the story of Alberto la Vaca (cow)!  Next week, we'll get to meet the character created by the 4th grade class!

      Ask your student:
      • What do you remember about Alberto's story? (He had a problem.  He didn't want to be a cow.  He wanted to be a dragon.  He was good at origami.  He made a lot of origami dragons.  He signed his name "El Dragón."  He became rich and famous.  A silly story, but it's one we can tell using only Spanish and it focuses on the Super Seven verbs.)
      Ask your student:
      • What do you remember about your class character? (We created a character that is a cow!  The cow is named Alberto and is microscopic, purple, red, and green.)

          • Students are allowed to practice and "redo" assignments as often as they like.  Practice is how we learn.
          • For each assignment completed, students will earn 2 "sellos o pegatinas" (stamps or stickers).  At the end of the year, they will be able to trade their stamps and stickers for small prizes.

        • What do you remember about Zara's story? (Her secret was that she had a portal to Mars.  A superhero discovered the portal and was afraid.  In the end Zara went to Mars.  A silly story, but it's one we can tell using only Spanish and it focuses on the Super Seven verbs.)

          2nd and 3rd Grade: January 15, 2020

          This week, we continued talking about silly snowmen in Spanish class!  We began by practicing numbers and counting buttons on snowmen, then we played a snowman guessing game.

          Ask your student:
          • What was the snowman guessing game you played in class?  (There were 15 snowmen on the screen.  Each one was unique.  Señora Brouwer described a snowman in Spanish, and students had to guess which one it was!  We also reversed the game and let students ask questions to try to discover which snowman it was.  We had a lot of fun speaking Spanish!)

          Kindergarten: January 15, 2020

          This week, we continued our new unit.  We'll be reading a short story and learning a traditional song for making hot chocolate.

              This week, we started a fun challenge!  Using only our imaginations and lots of Spanish, we began creating a "character."  The class created quite a character!  Next week, we'll add more details and create a story for our character.

                  Kindergarten: January 8, 2020

                  This week, we began a new unit.  We'll be reading a short story and learning a traditional song for making Mexican hot chocolate.

                  Ask your student:
                  • Who was the "estrellita" today?  (We're working our way through second turns.)
                  • Do you remember what "caliente" and "frío" mean?  (We pretended to drink hot chocolate that was hot-caliente and cold-frío.) 
                  Vocabulary
                  Words in bold are new this week, others are review.
                  • el chocolate - the chocolate (also refers to hot chocolate you drink)
                  • está caliente - it is hot
                  • está frío - it is cold
                  • está perfecto - it is perfect
                  • prueba - he/she tries/tastes
                    Song of the Week
                    Each week, we'll listen to and sing along with a fun song in Spanish.  It's a fun way to get us all up and moving while learning more!  If possible, I'll post a link to the song here so you can listen at home as well!

                    Bible Verse
                    This semester, our (HC)2 group will be memorizing a passage from Philippians 4.  In Spanish class, we will also be memorizing verse 4 in Spanish.  (Second semester verse coming soon!)
                    • Alégrense siempre en el Señor.  Insisto: alégrense.  Filipenses 4:4

                    Homework:
                    Occasionally, I will post links to videos, songs, or other resources for you to watch with your child over the week.  This is not required homework, but it is an opportunity to provide exposure to Spanish during the week.
