1st Grade: September 20, 2017

In addition to talking about the weather in Spanish and practicing our Bible memory verse, we learned about a few more farm animals.  We even played a game in teams to review what we know about each animal in Spanish!

Ask your student:
  • What were the animals you talked about in Spanish?  (We learned the words for horse--caballo, and pig--cerdo.)

    Kindergarten: September 20, 2017

    This week, we continued continued learning more body parts in Spanish.  We played a game another round of Simon Says in Spanish.  We also continued practicing our Spanish Bible memory verse.

    Ask your student:
    • Can you show me where your "manos" and "brazos" are?  (Brazos are arms and manos are hands.)

    5th and 6th Grade: September 13, 2017

    During class today, we watched a short movie and discussed it in Spanish.  It was a fun way to practice common Spanish vocabulary words.

    Ask your student:

    • Who is Ormie, and what was his problem? (Ormie is a pig who has a hard time getting some cookies off of the refrigerator.  We watched THIS version in class.)

      4th Grade: September 13, 2017

      Today in class, we continued learning a few high-frequency words in Spanish.  Over the next few weeks, we'll learn more common words and start stringing them together in to silly stories that we create together as a class...today's challenge was for students to work together as a class to create their own story.

      Ask your student:
      • What is "amigo del día"?  Who was today's "amigo del día"?  (Each week, we'll learn a little bit about a classmate.  Each student drew four-six pictures to represent people, activities, etc...that are important to them.  We'll spend some time each week talking about one student's mini poster all in Spanish!  Today's "amigo del día" was Pedro, our stuffed mouse.  He loves cheese and does not like cats.)

        2nd and 3rd Grade: September 13, 2017

        In Spanish this week, we continued to learn pet vocabulary!  Through this unit, we will be practicing various forms of the verb "to have," and we will be learning the names for pets/animals in Spanish.  Based on what the students have told me, some of you have some very interesting pets!  In class, we also completed a short reading activity/logic puzzle where we matched descriptions to pictures.

        Ask your student:
        • Do you we have any "culebras" around our house?  (The word "culebra" means snake.  While most of you don't have snakes as pets, a lot of students told me you have snakes around your homes.)

          After that, we continued learning words for our first unit all about farm animals.  We spent a lot of time speaking only in Spanish and practicing those words.

            This week, we continued our first unit in class.  We reviewed the words we learned last week, and learned how to say "eyes" and "ears" in Spanish.  Like last week, we played a few games to practice and sang some songs.

            5th and 6th Grade: September 6, 2017

            During class today, we walked over to the High School to join participate in this year's opening convocation with the entire Holland Christian student body.  It was a great time praying and praising the Lord together.

            Ask your student:

            • Tell me about the convocation at the high school?  Did you sing any favorite songs?  Did you learn a new favorite?  How did Mr. Mosterd (the man who was planting seeds) explain this years theme? ("Cultivating Shalom" is a lot like gardening.  It's hard work, and you need to work at it every day!)

              2nd and 3rd Grade: September 6, 2017

              This week in Spanish, we began learning the vocabulary for our first unit.  We'll be learning all about pets in Spanish!  This week, we only learned about cats and dogs, but we'll learn more soon!  (As we have fun talking about pets we have or want to have, we'll really be focusing on the verbs "to have" and "to want" in Spanish.)

              We also began learning our Bible memory verse (2 Corinthians 13:11) in Spanish.  See the homework links below for more information!

              Ask your student:
              • If Señora Brouwer says "Oh, alumnos" what do you say back?  ("Oh alumnos" means "Oh, students."  Students reply by saying, "Sí, maestra" which means "Yes, teacher.")
              • If Señora Brouwer asks you "¿Tienes mascota?" how would you answer? (The question asks if you have a pet, so the answer would be "sí" or "no.")
