3rd and 4th Grade: February 11, 2015

Today in class, we started a new unit.  We'll be talking about a Mexican tradition, but before we can learn about it, we had to learn how to say "-ing" verbs in Spanish.

Ask your student:

• What is the difference between these 2 Spanish verbs:  "habla" and "está hablando"? (Habla means s/he talks.  Está hablando means s/he IS talkING.) 

This week's vocabulary

• We focused on some "-ing" verbs
• está comiendo - he/she is eating
• está llorando - he/she is crying
• está saltando - he/she is jumping 
• está caminando - he/she is walking
• está jugando - he/she is playing
• está cantando - he/she is singing 
• está bailando - he/she is dancing
• está descansando - he/she is resting 

Homework:

Today in class, we began learning all about school related vocabulary.  We'll be practicing these words over the next few weeks.

Ask your student:

• Do you know the name of "el director" at Pine Ridge?  (It's Mr. Howell, the principal.) 

This week's vocabulary:

• el director - the principal
• la oficina - the office
• el profesor/la profesora - the teacher
• el aula - the classroom 
• el estudiante - the student 
• el pupitre - the desk

1st Grade: February 11, 2015

In Spanish class, started a new unit.  Over the next few weeks, we'll be learning the words for a Bible story in Spanish.  At first, I didn't tell the students what story we'd be learning, but I encouraged them to see if they could figure it out.  By the end of class today, they were able to guess correctly!

Ask your student:

• What Bible Story will you be learning in Spanish class?  (See vocabulary list for a few clues!)

• Jesús - Jesus
• habla - he/she talks
• escucha - he/she listens
• las personas - the people
• el pan - the bread
• el estómago - the stomach

Kindergarten: February 11, 2015

Today in class, we began learning vocabulary to learn the Noah's Ark story in Spanish.  It was a great way to review some of the animal vocabulary we learned earlier this year!

Ask your student:

• What sorts of animals did Noah take on the ark?  Can you name them in Spanish? (I was impressed at how many animal vocabulary words students remembered.)

This week's vocabulary:

• Noé - Noah
• el barco - the boat/ark
• Dios - God
• llueve - it rains
• mucho - a lot
• poco - a little
• Review animal words

Homework:

• We started learning a new song!  "La B-i-b-l-i-a"
• Practice our Bible verse and actions:  Psalm 23:1  (Click verse for Audio). 
• el Señor = the Lord = point up to heaven
• es mi = is my = point to self 
• pastor = shepherd = pretend to hold a staff in one hand, put other hand by forehead as if you're looking out over a field of sheep. 
• nada = nothing = wave hands palms facing down
• me falta = is lacking to me = place hands at side, palms facing upward.

5th and 6th Grade: February 4, 2015

Today in class, we played a game to speak "Mucho español!"

Ask your student:

• What "meta" (goal) did you have in the Uno game? (Using Uno cards, we played a game to practice using our new vocabulary words!)

Homework:

• Did you misplace your final assignment that was handed out two weeks ago?  Print another copy HERE.
• Our new song: Countries and Capitals of Central America/The Caribbean.  We'll be listening to this song in class each week.  The goal is for students to learn all of the countries and capitals by the end of April.
• We realized we need to brush up on numbers in Spanish (especially for saying how much something costs!).  Practice counting by 10s in Spanish with this song.  Here's another video that practices counting to 100 in Spanish.

3rd and 4th Grade: February 4, 2015

We finished our "shopping" unit this week by talking about the difference between needs and wants.

Ask your student:

• How many pélares did you have to spend in class?  What did you buy? (Pélares are an imaginary currency.  Students received anywhere from 30-100 and had to choose what to buy.  See the picture below.)

Homework:

• We realized we need to brush up on numbers in Spanish (especially for saying how much something costs!).  Practice counting by 10s in Spanish with this song.  Here's another video that practices counting to 100 in Spanish.

Today in class, we finished our unit about Peru by learning about Machu Picchu and looking at some traditional clothing.

• Do you remember what Machu Picchu is?  (It is an old palace for an emperor/lost city of the Incas.  The mountain in the background looks like a face if you turn it on its side.) 

This week's vocabulary:

• el palacio - the palace
• vieja - old
• tradicional - traditional

Homework:

• Review what we learned about Peru by watching/listening to the SLIDE SHOW we use in class.

1st Grade: February 4, 2015

In Spanish class, we continued our unit:  ¡Qué Rico! (How Delicious!).  This week we finished up by making a small book together!

Ask your student:

• You talked about three different foods in Spanish class:  empanadas, flan, and traditional tacos.  Which one sounds the most interesting to you?  Why?

• If your student misplaced the book from class, you can print a new one HERE.  You can simply cut the pages apart and staple them together, or you can fold the book as we did in class.  (Directions HERE).

Today in class, we continued practicing body parts in Spanish.

Ask your student:

• Which "amigo imaginaro" (imaginary friend) is yours?  Can you tell me about it in Spanish?  (Check out the creative "amigos" in THIS SLIDE SHOW.  We spent time in class asking and answering questions about them in Spanish.)

This week's vocabulary:

Our class did not meet today due to Market Day.  I loved seeing everyone's creativity at Market Day, and I enjoyed speaking español with you!  We'll wrap up our "Mercado" unit next week.

Today in class, we practiced a few buying/selling conversations in Spanish before we headed to Market Day to try them out "for real."

• Did you try speaking some Spanish at Market Day? (I was impressed that so many students decided to try talking to one or two of the older students in Spanish.)

Today in class, we continued learning all about Peru.  All in Spanish, we went looking for condors ("Goin' on a Bear Hunt" style).

• In Spanish class you had to use your imagination to go searching for something.  What was it?  (We went to Peru to search for a condor.  When we found one, we ran away.)
