1st Grade: October 15, 2014

This week in Spanish class, we continued our new unit all about farm animals.  We'll be learning the names of farm animals in Spanish.  We'll also learn how to say thing that the animals do (all in Spanish of course!)  For more information about our new unit, click here:  Farm Animals.

Ask your student:
  • What were the four animals you learned about in class today?  Do you remember how to say their names in Spanish?  (la oveja - the sheep, el gallo - the rooster, la rana - the frog, el cerdo - the pig) 
  • How can you remember the word sheep/la oveja?  (The sheep=la oveja...it sounds like "Obey-ha."  Jesus says that we are his sheep and He is our shepherd, so we remember that sheep have to obey their shepherd.)
Today's vocabulary:
  • salta - he/she jumps
  • come - he/she eats
  • canta - he/she sings
  • dice - he/she says
  • la rana - the frog
  • la oveja - the sheep 
  • el gallo - the rooster
  • el cerdo - the pig

Kindergarten: October 15, 2014

This week, we continued our new unit all about zoo animals.  We'll be learning the names of animals in Spanish.  We'll also learn to talk about things that the animals DO.  For more information on our Animal Unit, click HERE.

Ask your student:

  • What were the 3 animals you talked about in Spanish class?  Do you remember how to say their names in Spanish?  (el tigre=the tiger, el oso=the bear, la tortuga=the turtle)
  • What does a frog do?  Or ask: "How do you say 'jumps' in Spanish?"  (Salta = he/she jumps)
This week's vocabulary:
  • come - he/she eats
  • canta - he/she sings
  • corre - he/she runs
  • dice - he/she says

5th and 6th Grade: October 8, 2014

Today in class, we began a new unit.  Over the next few weeks, we'll be learning the vocabulary to retell the story of Jonah all in Spanish!

Ask your student:
  • Do you remember the sentences you wrote in class?  (We took some time in class to write out funny, unique sentences in Spanish using our new vocabulary words.)

Today's vocabulary:
  • quiere ir (a) - he/she wants to go (to)
  • habla - he/she speaks
  • oye - he/she hears
    • ¡Oye! is also used as an informal way to get someone's attention--like "Hey!" in English.
  • el hombre - the man
  • la ciudad - the city 
  • otro/otra - other
  • escucha - he/she listens
  • va (a) - he/she goes (to)
    • ¡Va! is also used as a command:  Go!

Homework:
  • Listen and sing along with our song:  Eres Todopoderoso.
  • Practice our vocabulary words with these activities:  Flashcards/Matching, Hangman
  • Quia assignment.  (Completing this assignment is worth 2 pegatinas)
  • Begin practicing our Bible Memory Verse:  Galatians 5:22

3rd and 4th Grade: October 8, 2014

Today in class we began a new unit.  We'll be learning vocabulary to describe people.  This week we started by learning the vocabulary to describe hair and eyes.

Ask your student:
  • Do you remember how to say what color hair and eyes you have? (See vocabulary list below.)
This week's vocabulary:
  • tiene-he/she has
  • pelo* largo - long hair
  • pelo corto - short hair 
  • pelo rubio - blonde hair
  • pelo negro - black hair
  • pelo rojo - red hair
  • pelo castaño - brown hair
  • pelo canoso - gray hair
    • *the word "cabello" is used in some Spanish speaking countries instead of pelo.
  • ojos azules - blue eyes
  • ojos verdes - green eyes
  • ojos grises - gray eyes
  • ojos castaños - brown eyes

  • What is "Veo, veo"? (It is like "I spy" in English.  We played it in class so we could review the color vocabulary words.)

5th and 6th Grade: October 1, 2014

Today in class we finished our unit "Las Islas" by talking about foods!  This week we talked about different things and places and different things to do on the islands.

Ask your student:
  • What foods did you sample in class today?  What did you think about them?  (We sampled mangú (mashed plantain) and morir soñando (orange juice and milk drink).  The morir soñando was quite popular!)
  • What word doesn't exist in Spanish?  (Just like we don't have a word for "mangú" they don't have a word for "fudge" in Spanish.  We describe mangú as mashed plantains.  In Spanish they would talk about fudge as a sweet made from chocolate and cream.)

  • los dulces - the sweets/candies
  • los batidos - the milkshakes/smoothies
  • la naranja - the orange
  • los plátanos - the plantains
  • los mangos - the mangos
  • las piñas - the pineapples
  • la leche - the milk

  • What are 3 or 4 things that El Ratoncito Pérez does?  Can you say them in Spanish?  (Busca dientes=looks for teeth; encuentra dientes=finds teeth; toma dientes=takes teeth; deja dinero=leaves money)

Today in Spanish class, we completed our first unit of the year:  La Mariposa Monarca (The Monarch Butterfly).  Today we reviewed everything and made a little booklet to remind ourselves of what we learned.

On Wednesday, we finished our clothing and colors unit by reviewing all of the vocabulary with a few games.  Over the course of the year, we'll continue to practice this vocabulary.  Up next week? We'll begin learning about zoo animals!

  • If it's hot out, what's one thing you would wear?  Can you name that in Spanish?  (pantalones cortos - shorts, la camiseta - the t-shirt...)
  • If it's cold out, what's one thing you would wear?  Can you name that in Spanish?  (pantalones - pants, la camisa - the long sleeve shirt, el gorro - the hat, la chaqueta - the jacket)
