4/5/6: February 12, 2014

In class today, we began a new unit.  This week and next week we'll be learning some location words in Spanish.  Then, we'll use those words to talk about a famous Spanish painting!  Click HERE for more information about this unit.

Ask your student:
  • What did you talk about with the stuffed animals?  (We played with stuffed animals in class!  With their partners, students would listen to me say a sentence in Spanish and they would act it out with their animals.)

Today's vocabulary:
  • delante de - in front of
  • enfrente de - in front of (face-to-face)
  • detrás de - behind/in back of
  • encima de - on top of 
  • debajo de - under
  • cerca de - close to/near
  • lejos de - far from 
  • al lado de - next to/beside

Today in class, we started a new unit.  We'll be learning all about restaurant-related vocabulary!

Ask your student:
  • How do you say "I need the plate, please" in Spanish?  Do you remember what you asked for in class?  ("Necesito el plato, por favor.  In class we played a game and students practiced asking for specific items.)

Today's vocabulary:
  • el restaurante - the restaurant
  • el camarero - the waiter
  • la camarera - the waitress
  • la mesa - the table
  • el plato - the plate
  • el vaso - the glass
  • la servilleta - the napkin
  • el menú - the menu
  • necesito - I need
  • por favor - please

1st Grade: February 12, 2014

In Spanish class, started a new unit.  Over the next few weeks, we'll be learning the words for a Bible story in Spanish.  I didn't tell the students what story we'd be learning, but I encouraged them to see if they could figure it out.

Ask your student:
  • What Bible Story do you think you'll be learning in Spanish class?  (See vocabulary list for a few clues.  I'll tell students next week what the story is!)  
Today's vocabulary:
  • Jesús - Jesus
  • habla - he/she talks
  • escucha - he/she listens
  • las personas - the people
  • el pan - the bread
  • el estómago - the stomach

Kindergarten: February 12, 2014

Today in class, we began learning vocabulary to learn the Noah's Ark story in Spanish.  It was a great way to review some of the animal vocabulary we learned earlier this year!

Ask your student:
  • What sorts of animals did Noah take on the ark?  Can you name them in Spanish? (I was impressed at how many animal vocabulary words students remembered.)
This week's vocabulary:
  • Noé - Noah
  • el barco - the boat/ark
  • Dios - God
  • llueve - it rains
  • mucho - a lot
  • poco - a little
  • Review animal words
Homework:
  • We started learning a new song!  "La B-i-b-l-i-a"

In class today, we finished talking about the history of chocolate.  We focused on how the Spaniards brought cacao back to Spain and were the first to add sugar to it.

Ask your student:
  • What did the Spaniards do when they met the Aztecs?  (They conquered them and told them to hand over their "treasures."  The Aztecs gave the Spaniards cacao beans because they were something that they treasured.)

Today in class, we continued learning all about Costa Rica!  Today we talked about the natural beauty of Costa Rica.

Ask your student:
  • Do you remember what "Costa Rica" means?  Why does it have that name?  (Costa Rica means "rich coast."  It has that name because there is so much coastline with natural beauty.)

Today's vocabulary:
  • la costa - the coast
  • el parque - the park
  • la selva - the jungle
  • la selva tropical - the rainforest
  • la rana - the frog
  • el volcán - the volcano.

In Spanish class, we continued our unit:  ¡Qué Rico! (How Delicious!).  This week we finished up by making a small book together!

Ask your student:
  • You talked about three different foods in Spanish class:  empanadas, flan, and traditional tacos.  Which one sounds the most interesting to you?  Why?

  • If your student misplaced the book from class, you can print a new one HERE.  You can simply cut the pages apart and staple them together, or you can fold the book as we did in class.  (Directions HERE).

In class today, we continued talking about the history of chocolate.  We focused on how the Aztecs had to trade with the Mayas to get cacao beans for themselves.

Ask your student:
  • Why were cacao beans worth so much to the Aztecs?  (Where the Aztecs lived, it was too dry to grow cacao trees.  They had to travel to the south and trade with the Mayas to get cacao beans.  The beans were so valuable to the Aztecs, that they used them as money.)

Today in class, we continued learning all about Costa Rica!  Today we talked about the typical foods.

Ask your student:
  • Do you remember what "Gallo Pinto" is?  What two foods do they mix together to make Gallo Pinto?  (Gallo Pinto is one of the most common meals in Costa Rica.  They mix rice and black beans together.)

Today's vocabulary:
  • el arroz - the rice
  • el pollo - the chicken
  • los frijoles negros - the black beans 
  • los plátanos - the plantains/bananas
  • las frutas - frutas
  • las verduras - the vegetables

In Spanish class, we continued our unit:  ¡Qué Rico! (How Delicious!).  This week we talked about tacos from Mexico.

Ask your student:
  • Are tacos from Mexico the same as tacos from "Taco Bell"?  How are they the same?  How are they different?  (Both kinds of tacos have meat and tortillas.  In Mexico, they also put onion and cilantro on the tacos.  If they use cheese it is white.  At Taco Bell/In the US, our tacos usually have lettuce and tomatoes.  The cheese is a yellow-orange color. )

  • la cebolla - the onion
