2/3: October 9, 2013

Today in class, we started our new unit:  Los 5 Sentidos.  We'll be learning about each of our 5 senses and how they help us to experience God's world.  For more information about our new unit, click HERE.

Ask your student:
  • What is "Veo, veo"? (It is like "I spy" in English.  We played it in class so we could review the color vocabulary words.)

Today's vocabulary:
  • veo - I see
  • los ojos - the eyes
  • los sentidos - the feelings/senses
  • Los colores (colors)
  • Game:  Veo, Veo
    • Veo, veo - I see, I see (Like "I spy")
    • ¿Qué ves? - What do you see?
    • Una cosita - A small thing
    • ¿Qué cosita es? - What small thing is it?
    • Es de color... - It is the color...

Homework:
  • Sing along with our song:  5 Sentidos Rap
  • Practice our Bible verse:  1 Corinthians 10:31.  Be ready to say the verse by October 9.  CLICK HERE!

In class today, we started a new unit!  Little by little, we'll be learning the vocabulary words to read (and retell) a Bible Story in Spanish.  For more information about our new unit, click HERE.  (Spoiler alert:  the title of the document gives away what Bible story we'll be talking about!)

Ask your student:
  • Can you show me the actions that go with at least 4 of your new vocabulary words?  (Students helped to think up motions to help us remember each of the new vocabulary words.)

Today's vocabulary:
  • el rey - the king (la reina - the queen)
  • el palacio - the palace
  • los hombres - the men
  • cierra - he/she closes
  • le dice - he/she says to him or her
  • lo pone - he/she puts it
  • mira - he/she looks at
  • miran - they look at
  • trabaja - he/she works

Homework:
  • Sing along with our song:  Eres digno de alabar (Worthy of Praise)
  • OPTIONAL:  In class today, we began a worksheet.  Students may finish the worksheet to earn extra stickers (up to 4 stickers depending on how much you choose to complete).  If you misplaced the worksheet, you can print off another copy HERE.
  • Practice our Vocabulary words with THIS Quia game. 
  • Complete THIS Quia assignment (worth 2 pegatinas)
  • Practice our Bible Verse:  John 3:16.  (Click HERE for slide show!  You will earn 2 pegatinas/stickers for memorizing this verse by October 9...New verse coming NEXT WEEK!)

1st Grade: October 9, 2013

This week in Spanish class, we started a new unit all about farm animals.  We'll be learning the names of farm animals in Spanish.  We'll also learn how to say thing that the animals do (all in Spanish of course!)  For more information about our new unit, click here:  Farm Animals.

Ask your student:
  • What were the three animals you learned about in class today?  Do you remember how to say their names in Spanish?  (el pájaro - the bird, el pato - the duck, el pez - the fish)
  • What does a fish do?  Hint:  Does he fly or does he swim?  (nada = he/she swims)
Today's vocabulary:
  • el pájaro - the bird

Kindergarten: October 9, 2013

This week, we started a new unit all about zoo animals.  We'll be learning the names of animals in Spanish.  We'll also learn to talk about things that the animals DO.  For more information on our Animal Unit, click HERE.

Ask your student:

  • What were the 3 animals you talked about in Spanish class?  Do you remember how to say their names in Spanish?  (el pez=the fish, el pájaro=the bird, el pingüino=the penguin)
  • What does a bird do?  Or ask: "How do you say 'flies' in Spanish?"  (Vuela = he/she flies)
This week's vocabulary:

1st Grade: October 2, 2013

Today in Spanish class, we completed our first unit of the year:  La Mariposa Monarca (The Monarch Butterfly).  Today we reviewed everything and made a little booklet to remind ourselves of what we learned.

Ask your student:
  • Do you have your book from class?  Let's read it together!  (Everyone helped to make a recording of us reading the book in Spanish!  You can listen to it HERE.)

2/3: October 2, 2013

Today in class, we finished our first unit:  Mi rutina, la rutina de otros (My Routine and the Routine of Others).  Today we focused on differences between kids in the US and kids in Spain.

Ask your student:
  • At what time do we (usually) eat lunch?  Can you say that time in Spanish?  When would a kid in Spain eat lunch? (See Review of Time below.  We have learned how to say simple phrases such as eleven o'clock and eleven thirty.  In the US, most kids eat lunch around 12.  In Spain, most families eat around 2.)
  • When do kids in Spain get home from school?  (Most kids get home from school/(HC)2 between 3 and 3:30.  In Spain, kids go home from 1-3, but then they go back to school from 3-5.)

Review of time:
  • A las seis = at six o'clock
  • A las seis y media = at six thirty
  • A las ocho = at eight o'clock
  • A las ocho y media = at eight thirty

Kindergarten: October 2, 2013

On Wednesday, we finished our clothing and colors unit by reviewing all of the vocabulary with a few games.  Over the course of the year, we'll continue to practice this vocabulary.  Up next week? We'll begin learning about zoo animals!

Ask your student:

  • If it's hot out, what's one thing you would wear?  Can you name that in Spanish?  (pantalones cortos - shorts, la camiseta - the t-shirt...)
  • If it's cold out, what's one thing you would wear?  Can you name that in Spanish?  (pantalones - pants, la camisa - the long sleeve shirt, el gorro - the hat, la chaqueta - the jacket)
This week's vocabulary:
  • Review all clothing and colors
Homework:
  • Listen and sing along with our two songs:  colors songclothing song.
  • Practice our vocabulary words with this Who's Who? listening activity.

Today, we finished up our unit about Chile and we celebrated with a ramada.  We watched a short video of traditional cueca dancers and we played a mini version of the game rayuela.

Ask your student:
  • What is a ramada?  (It's an independence day party.  People eat empanadas, play traditional games, and dance the traditional dance of Chile:  la cueca.)
  • How do you play rayuela?  (You try to throw a stone as close as you can to a line drawn on the ground, or over a target filled with mud.  In class we played a mini version with nickles)

Today's vocabulary:

  • la ramada - Chilean independence day party
  • la cueca - the traditional dance of Chile
  • rayuela - a traditional Chilean game.  
  • comen - they eat
  • bailan - they dance
  • juegan - they play

Homework:
  • Sing along with our song:  Eres digno de alabar (Worthy of Praise)
  • Review weather and seasons by listening to this song.
  • Our final unit assignment was handed out in class.  If you misplaced it, you can print off another copy HERE.
